Thanks Andy. Pisses me off I just spent a buttload of cash on four rare cichlids and can't even get pic that is worth posting. You've seen it so you kow what I'm talking about. So frustrating...

In regards to my question, has anyone hooked up UV to an FX5 or is my only option the self powered type???

I use my 20W Danner UV with a Magnum 350 using the micron cartdige... excellent results... but this is to eradicate parasites, calrify water, kill algae and all other UV benefits...

Using a little 5~7W w/ built in powerhead won't give you the full range of benefits, but will work like a charm against algae.

You could use the FX5, but you'll wat to T off the main line... You could do this and go with a larger UV, such as a 13~20W light at around 10 gph per W to give yourself the full range of UV benefits...

Or grab one of the little 5 or 7W units with a built in powerhead to take care of the algae only...

There are large UV unuits that can be hooked up to the FX5's full blast, but now your talking high dollar lights that are more high powered than your tank needs...

Thanks NC, you've been really helpful and I appreciate your time in responding to my questions. :D

the back of your tank is painted black... how is the light from the window getting through the paint and only getting the front glass......

how many hours a day are you leaving the light in the tank on/lights on in the room...

The blinds behind the tank are closed so nothing is getting through the black background. There is a sliding glass door directly across from the tank on an oposing wall. The tank gets constant ambient light from this room (obviously) so I only run my lights from when I get home around 7pm to 10pm.

windows and doors on different walls... no fair your house sounds bigger than mine :(

these are great as are the ebay knockoffs (half the price).. the UV bulbs can be found at both lowes/homedepot by the pond stuff for about $10..

im heading into the second summer of having one running on a south facing (full sun) outdoor "pond type" tanks (aka no water changes just plants and feeders than the old lady and kid thought were "awwwwwww cuuuuuute")

only issue ive had are that the Oring on the glass tube inside split the first time you overtighten it ... a few drops of silicone works well to seal it however it makes it very hard to change the bulb and theres a good chance that in that time you will have forgotten about the silicone and end up crushing both the bulb and tube if you are not careful.. Orings are pretty easy to come across and ive had no issues with using one i found at HD..

i also run one of them in my hospital/Q tank..
