When you are at the Baltimore aquarium and the crowd you generate while being a nerd is so large describing the fish and their habits. The aquarium workers ask if you work there and are giving a presentation they didn't know about..... True story. And they stayed and listened as I answered questions from the crowd.
My kids were like " Daddy you should get a job here". I was so proud... My wife was so embarrassed.

When,as you are leaving the fish store,you see a guy approaching while carrying a bucket and you stop him and ask to see what he is bringing in....okay,that may not be nerdy but I have done that a few times and intercepted some nice buys.
