You like painted on back grounds ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have had my tank for about 8 mo now, had the black plastic background and liked it, seemed to make all my fish stand out color wlse, just didnt like the cheap look of it and how it would rustle in the breeze in the summer etc.. So i figure a painted one would be ok. Might maybe just paint one of the big tanks and leave the other bare with no background at all. cant decide, like you said , its permanant. I think i will try the metallic highlighte background when i replace my 30 and 10 gallon tanks. I noticed the red empress really looked even more metallic and darker colors with it. Maybe i can keep a colorful male peacock in a 30 gallon. Or a dwarf species. Oh, i know, when i get remempress fry i can put them in there to grow out.

never painted mine black, I wouldnt want to b/c it I ever want to change it, it would be a pain to take off. I like vinyl, we used it on my bf's 180gal and it looks wonderfull =]

It's not that bad to take off. Use Acrylic paint and if you want to change it just scrape off with a razor blade....

I bought latex paint, is that any harder to remove than the acrylic ?

Also, i have both flat and semi gloss. Which should i use.

sorry to burst your bubble:banhim::cry:

i hope you realise those backgrounds leech chemicals and dissolve over time i hope your dont have expensive fish in there:cry:

i have seen them tested but dont have a internet source. as in tested by a mate and the fish died.

i took all that into consideration, i sprayed it with clear marine paint.

I think the Vinyl idea is awesome...

Also, if bought from a sign shop, they could put a nice MFK logo on it:D

I have no idea on how hard it is to scrape off latex. I know that acrylic has this sort of plastic-like consistency when it's dry and peels off really easy.

I'm not sure if Latex bonds more with the glass and thus makes it harder to remove. Try a dab of it on the back below the line of the gravel and let it dry and see what happens.

As for flat or semi gloss, I would go with flat. Like I said, if it's not a 3D background, then I want the background to be minimal. I want people looking at my fish, not my background....

i know the feeling!!! i have been waiting for like a month for my tank and get it thursday!!!! ahhh i finally get to start buying more fish haha

I just recently painted the back of my 220 with black latex paint. I used a foam roller and I have to say it went on pretty easy. The tank was already set up so I did not move it. So that made it a bit more complicated than the tank was empty. Other than that it was cool and it looks sooooo much better. Go to home depot and get behr flat black. Its acrylic paint so it should come off with a blade if you ever want to remove the paint. I made 2 passes and there is no missed spots.
