The greatest risk in crossing species from different locations is any potential unique evolutionary history, and possibly unique behavioural traits, are in an instant lost forever. Genetically speaking these fish could be different/unique from each other. In fact, in many cases over the years new species have been described, from what was once a large group of fish all lumped together under the same genus, or species. It's a slippery slope.....

I only posted for educational purposes, certainly not going to attempt to change the OP's mind. :)

I strongly suspect that had he taken either location, and worked with the most colorful examples for a few years, he could have gotten the exact same result. Line breeding for more/better color in any species of fish doesn't require sourcing wild fish from different collection locations. The ponds in south Florida are full of colorful line bred cichlids, all home grown by various breeders. Yawn.
