My dad always had a tank around the house, I don't remember what he had in them.
I won a few goldfish at fairs and killed them in my ignorance between the ages of five and ten years old.
My first real effort was a well-equipped 10g with baby versions of *gasp*: Adonis pleco, tiretrack eel, three cory cats, a female betta, a madtom catfish and some others. That's when I sought education on the subject and learned that I was accidentally cycling the tank with these fish. I immediately upgraded and they lived for the time being. The Adonis eventually died of bloat and the eel jumped out and got stepped on, but now I've got a better record. My Raphael is four years old and I'm pretty proud of that. My giant otto is three and I'm even prouder of that, since they are supposed to be a little sensitive.
