Well I find it with enough Scotch I can ignore the tedium.

. . . I made what I considered a positive life choice. . . .

Look, not everybody can or should raise kids. Your personal choice could have been more positive than you know. Who knows but that you might have been a terrible parent or perhaps the victim of patricide!

Parents can't usually predict how their kids are going to turn out. ;)

Thinking that we can predict the future of something as large and chaotic as the Earth with any certainty whatsoever is very far afield in my imagination, except for one thing.

The one thing that we can be absolutely one hundred percent sure of is that disaster could wipe out most of the Earth's population at any time and virtually without notice.

The only way the human race survives from something like that is to have enough human beings spread out over enough of the planet with a big enough gene pool that the survivors can repopulate the Earth.

As for that thing about interbreeding I realize the hybridization may not always be the best thing in a gene pool, but then it may also not be the worst.

I don't have to list the maladies associated with inbreeding. A proper gene pool is not optional.

Hello; Interesting deflection but not unique. A few times over the decades when I have discussed the population issue a few have thrown a variation of this at me. At first I was bothered that my stated reasons for being childless were being questioned but eventually figured it was just a ploy. One even somehow decided I did not have children because I am selfish.
I spent over 32 years in public school classrooms with children and drove a school bus for 13 of those years. I did fine around children. Even had a few adults tell me I was the sort of person who should have children.
lets us be considered tor be on different sides of this issue. Look at it this way, your side won the issue. If my recollection of the numbers is correct the human population has more than doubled in my single lifetime. The population is continuing to follow the hockey stick curve. I and those on my side of this issue have lost.

I guess you missed the part of my spiel that back in the 1970's some of us did predict a few of the things that are taking place now. So there are at least a few things predictable other that a global extinction event.

I did not bother with this discussion with any hope my comments would influence you at all. Been there and wasted a lot of energy with others having a similar view to yours. I made my points because I felt there was at least one other forum member who might benefit form the discussion.

hello; The above link is to an interesting site. In the environmental portion is a number for the topsoil lost in the current year. There is also a population estimate.

My side? I have a side?

This is me at the shotgun range. On my side.
It's the only place where I always stay on my side!

OK, mass murderers are more hated, but that's a special case.

Anyhow I believe mankind will surge and crash repeatedly, as it has before.
It's our history. It's our nature to do so. Fighting that is possible, but winning?

Thank you. I really appreciated hearing (or I should say, reading) your reasons for not having kids as they're all among mine too. I also have some other reasons that I won't share here because I feel they're very controversial and I don't want to upset or offend anyone - or get banned!!!

But it is nice to know I'm not crazy, when people find out that I don't want kids they look at me like I'm crazy... I actually had one lady (or girl, she was 19) tell me I was stupid for not wanting kids..

It is also very reassuring that you don't regret your decision as everyone tells me I'll regret mine or I'll change my mind when I'm 40, I don't think I will but people insist it lol

Hello; yes I have been told similar things (or girl, she was 19) tell me I was stupid for not wanting kids..) and even worse. I have been able to think about this for a few decades and while I will not claim to have it figured out, I do have a few theories. I think in part they do not want the clearly negative aspects of human overpopulation to be possible. The notion that some of the things I consider highly likely are possible just does not fit well into a more established world view.
Some work it around to some form of how I must not like kids. While not true that seems to be a way they can deal with. My claim of being concerned for the welfare of the potential child is not often accepted. Even ion this thread there is an example below.

Hello; The closest to a regret was after being married to my second wife for a few years. She knew going in there were not to be any biological children but eventually brought it up. I think all her sisters had children by then. Anyway we talked adoption but I had some conditions which she was not willing to meet. Children already born need care and love.

I am male so cannot say if the biological urge to have children is stronger in females. I know it can be dealt with from my own experience.
Good luck with whatever you do.
