Really weird, I was drive home and got close to my neighborhood when my daughter asked why are those birds flying around. I looked up and it was about 10-20 vultures circling around (wtf?). It was on the far side of the neighborhood. I drove over there. But they were breaking up and disappearing.

Has anyone seen this before?

Happens all the time, but usually only for two reasons: there's a good thermal in that area, or a fresh carcass (N. American vultures don't eat rotten meat), check to see if there's a corpse, it won't be very smelly if the turkey and black vultures are interested.

Do they circle as a means to alert other vultures to the meal?

They tend to spiral to stay inside the thermal updraft, if they leave it they have to expend a lot of energy flapping, think of a thermal as a vertical tower of heat, the spiral is just an energy saving method
