Happens all the time, but usually only for two reasons: there's a good thermal in that area, or a fresh carcass (N. American vultures don't eat rotten meat), check to see if there's a corpse, it won't be very smelly if the turkey and black vultures are interested.Really weird, I was drive home and got close to my neighborhood when my daughter asked why are those birds flying around. I looked up and it was about 10-20 vultures circling around (wtf?). It was on the far side of the neighborhood. I drove over there. But they were breaking up and disappearing.
Has anyone seen this before?
They tend to spiral to stay inside the thermal updraft, if they leave it they have to expend a lot of energy flapping, think of a thermal as a vertical tower of heat, the spiral is just an energy saving methodDo they circle as a means to alert other vultures to the meal?
