Your opinions on fish that can go with a catfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you would be able to keep them perminantly in a 75.
typo? a 4' + fish in an 18" deep tank?
some porthole cats would be ok in that size tank, they get 8"-9", lace cats get 6"-7".
I'd go Here and check out the shape you like most, then you can explore their sizes to find something that will fit your tank. I've got a 240G and even though I like them, I'm avoiding bullheads because in the long run, my tank isn't big enough to give them a decent life. maybe a spotted if I run across them, they would be OK in my tank.
I wouldn't go above 12" in a 75G (48"x18"), and even then I'd be hoping it didn't grow full size. 8"-9" long is a good size for that tank.

Get a Synodontis cat. They all stay relatively small.

Dude - Bullheads are everywhere here - I grew up catching them, thank you very much - but never huge ones like this.
The larger mature bullheads are found in deep parts and not schooling with smaller bullheads. In my job, we usually caught these larger ones in deep water...around 10 to 30 feet deep, even during summer time. I never caught a big bullhead in a school of smaller bullheads which is more common than solitary mature bullheads. Interestingly the larger bullheads are present only in the waters where the higher numbers of predatory fishes existed (northern pike, muskellunge, bass, walleye, dogfish and catfish) but rarely in the waters that have very few or lack of predatory fishes.

Your observations are very interesting and they make sense - The ones I've caught and continue to catch, are all in the 8 - 10 inch range, in shallower water - ponds, slow rivers, etc - I have never caught one of the deepwater ones (Never tried.) COOL!

Lol, yea typo, meant to say that iridescents canNOT be kept long term in a 75, though I've heard there two different kinds and one stays small longer,( slow growth rate) I got an albino irredescent for my 65 gallon about three months ago and it's still under 2",

I kept a channel cat in a 75 for a long time. Only reason I eventually traded it in was because at night I would hear it tossing driftwood and rocks against the glass. Knew it was only a matter of time.

Poor Channel Cat.

I have one, too, in a 75, and he will need to be moved very soon, after only about 10 months.

Iridescent sharks get even bigger, but grow slower - if you go with Iridescent sharks, be prepared for when they do get big.

Synodontis cats are your best bet long term.
