Your Weak Point

African Cichlids....

They were my first fish, and I kept them for years, but all they have for africans in my area are plain jane, run of the mill fish and that leaves me with little interest.. If they stocked some rare fish at a fish store id be all up in that.

I've always prided myself in knowing alot of general information about alot of general things..

One thing I realized I didn't know much about the other day when I acquired some new fish, was COMPATIBILITY in MONSTERS! Jardinis, Bichirs, big Cats.. I had an idea of which ones could live together, but no first hand experience!

I guess my main weak point lies primary in that I tend to keep the same fish for a long time, instead of a variety of fish. For instance I call this my third wave of bettas.

Planted and marine aquariums. I will also admit that I don't know much about some of the machanics. Some of the various filtesr, ne-nitrators, protein skimmers, chillers, reverse osmosis units etc. It is partly my ignorance of these various machines that keeps me away from marine and planted in the first place. I'm just not a hi-tech person, in any aspect of my life. All my tanks are run simply and with just basic equipment.

I am suprised that so many people have no interest in african cichlids. The LFSs seem to think they are the end-all and be-all of fish with more tanks devoted to them than any other fish type (at least around here).

My weak points are just about everything. I know the basics, but the more I know, the more I realize I don't know. The scary thing is that I know a helluva lot more than just about anyone who works at any of the LFSs. My biggest weak point would be salt water, followed by african cichlids and rays.
Thats the same story were I live. When I go to my fish meetings, they all talk in african cichlid scientific names and african jargon. Im trying to figure out why they focus on those soo much. Why cant they use american scientific names!:headbang2
That or talk about something other than african cichla.

wow! i guess im not alone on not knowing much about africans.
its like MFKs majority weakness. anyway, i never find them interesting.

ive no experience in sw yet but im interested in them so im sure in due time ill be heading off the shelves for knowledge.

Rays....african ID's and planted tanks.
And small community fish IDs

Don't know much of anything to do with african cichlids or anything much about crenicichla. Also limited knowledge on marines. Don't know much about U.S. natives either.
But you always learn something about everything in fishkeeping, so it's all fun.

Wow, I'm surprised that so many people are stating African lake cichlids but then again, lots to know in that department for sure. My major weakness is with live plants. If compact flourescent lighting weren't so pricey I'd probably have better luck. I know almost nothing about invertibrates, killifish, livebearers, SW and too much more to mention.
