There is nothing like peering into a clear pristine lake with zebra mussels as far as the eye can see and watching carp swim among the forests of Eurasian water milfoil gently swaying to the rhythm of the water. So much beauty, so much diversity.

Nature in all it's glory. Makes you proud to be an American.

We have some lakes like that, its so beauty that many people left that lake alone for many years.:nilly:

God help me, I said I had thought about keeping them. (that thought occured a long time ago when they were just starting to get the publicity) I often use Asian clams in my filter sump, I said I had thought of using zebra mussels because I thought they would be a good filter. I "thought" about it, I think about lots of things I would never do. I do not think they could colonize a closed septic tank, I stand by that 100% if anyone can show they can I would like to see the evidence for that. I know they spread easily, I do not condone keeping them but I did say I wondered how much of a problem it could be if they were released into a place where they already covered everything. This is crazy, I do not keep zebra mussels, do not advocate keeping them, do not think I am exempt from the ban on keeping them, and I don't see why I seem to be the poster boy for keeping zebra mussels.

I live between two lakes that are just like that, that's a site I've seen for real.

Moon,

You're a good guy and I swear I'm not picking on you or misunderstanding you.

I think it's pointless to discuss keeping an animal banned from possession in all 50 states.

It's along the same lines that we cannot keep snakeheads in several areas. I'm from Maryland, and they obviously didn't catch/kill every snakehead which got released, they're still catching them in the local rivers and such. I know Zebra Mussels are at the top of the list for invasive species, especially up around the Great Lakes. Same with the guy from Syracuse with Rocky the snakehead. While he had no intention of releasing the animal, he still got fined and the animal was confiscated (or is due to be euthanized, jury is still out on what will happen to Rocky).

If you were to be caught with Zebra Mussels in your tank, you would most likely be fined among other things. Even though I'm sure there would be no intention of releasing them into the wild. Keeping zebra mussels in a tank seems to be asking for trouble, IMO. Plus what has already been stated regarding the mussels clogging up all tubes and becoming more trouble than they're really worth. The fact is that they're invasive and they're too much of a liability, as they're causing a lot of trouble in the Great Lakes and they're already making their way into the Chesapeake Bay.

I fish the reseviors in MD. If you have a Jon boat you have to have it certified that it has only been and will only be used in the reseviours out of fear of zeb mussels hitching a ride.

Yeah I've fished the reservoirs up there and encountered the same thing. I'm pretty sure that the zebras have made it into the Bay however....

I dislike Zeebs very much. There will be always new zebra mussel infestions in new lakes every year in Minnesota despite the carefully controlling to not spread them around but it is not easy. And we will expect the Asian carps become residents of Minnesota soon. Both invasives pose serious threats to us and the natives.
