Dun think our freshwater tanks are too concentrated with salt that can do the recharging right?

That might depend on how much salt is dozed into the aquarium. Am not sure if even a little salt would cause it to leach. Salt content might also accumilate since not a 100% of the water is changed & salt doesn't evaporate. Anyway the thread is meant to give caution nothing else :)

the conditon is caleld head rot

often confused with hole in the head

heres some info:

This is a very unique syndrome affecting more on Asian Arowanas then its Australian and South America couterpart, it is also more common in younger arowanas. In this syndrome, the head of the fish start to get oedematous(swollen) followed by a layer peeling off from the skin, starting from the front of the head and moving backward.

Activated carbon is believe to be the cause due to its close association with the syndrome. It is thought that activated carbon removed vital element in the water and hence disallow the head tissue to form normally. Other hypothesis around include irriation by the microscopic carbon particle deposite on the head. Healing is usually complete and occur withing days when carbon is removed. Zeolite product could cause similar problem too but less severe and less common. Large arowana is less sensitive Head-rot Syndrome.

also remember carbon and zeolite are not the same.

Good one

so forgive my ignorance, but I haven't heard "zeolyte" before. So are ammo chips what you're talkinga bout? They came standard in my canister filter, I removed the carbon.
???? educate mei ling please:

Ammo chips are zeolite.

Thanks for the tip, never thought of that.

So WTF good is the filter?, first I needed to remove the carbon, now my tank has been stable for 8 mos, I have been using a little salt, so am I safest to remove the zeolyte and then but more biorings in instead? There's gonna be nothing left in my canister....help a Mei out here, I'm getting a sensitive Elephant nose today, I'm all for change for the better. It's not a good time to rock the boat, so I really dont have that much tankload, so ammo isn't a problem, maybe because I have ammo chips, If I take them out will there be any reaction at all in my water.? My params are perfect right now. Well, perfect for well water................

relaxe

its nothing serious

I never use zeolite or carbon unless I am addressing a particular temporary problem. I just want biofilters to do their job, so I don't want to arbitrarily change my water chemistry and bio balance each time I change the chemical filters.

And thanks for the original post. I had never thought about that.

Speaking just for myself, I would do nothing until the next time I cleaned the filter. Then I would replace some or all of the ammo chips with bio media, depending on your bio load.
