The colouring is right, and the tail is close enough, you can also tell by the shape of the body; Pulchers are much taller than other Datnoid species. The one your buddy is holding just looks like an odd ball IT.

so by that reasoning this won't be called an ST?

Also compare the 4th stripe from the tail of your buddies fish to both pulcher pictures provided; by the bottom of the stripe it sweeps back like an IT instead of coming straight down like the 2 real pulchers.

LoL! none of those are Pulchers, they are just selectively bred ITs to get the bar markings similar to a real Pulchers... those are like a man made widebar. On a plus side, since they are so abundant now with the captive breeding, they shouldnt be too expensive.
