It will continue to bind ammonia for up to 48 hours after that you need to do a water change and redose it doesn't last forever. The ammonia that is converted will stay bound and not be realeased but it will stop binding any additional ammonia.

so the free floating negative ions that have not bound to a positive molecule loose there negative charge?

The key word being UP to 48 hrs. None of these time frames being given are absolute. Don't get hung up on 48 hrs, as previously stated there are lots of factors to take in and no two systems are going to be exactly identical in parameters.

question I posed had nothing to do with a fish system. only what happens in a closed system. tank of pure water. 2.00ppm ammonia added and single dose of prime/safe. but like to take this a bit further per say. I add 1.0ppm ammonia and a single dose of prime. treats up to 2.0ppm ammonia. what happens to the extra ions (salt). do they decay with in 48 hours? and if they do, does ions bound to the ammonia molecules also decay?

I think its an interesting question. not looking to bug any one here. looking for answers to make my answers to folks question correct. rely less on assumption and more in facts.

Oh I see, it has nothing to do with anything relative to this discussion, or anything else regarding keeping fish and using water conditioners. I already gave you the answer you need to give more accurate info next time someone asks these types of questions. My advice would be to spend more time absorbing that info & less time asking questions that have nothing to do with a fish system so in the future your time (and mine) will be better spent.

My apologies to the OP for the massive derail.

sounds like a mini cycle to me. usually caused by a disruption of the bio filters. changing of substrate can bring this on also if bio filtration is bare min to meet requirements of the tank.
