I highly doubt internal parasites can kill a fish. Some of my fish have had them for years, i dont even bother to treat it. Their just always a lil skinny.
Really? Wow so I'm guessing if you i mean YOU have tapeworm with no treatment you won't die. You just be skinny forever. Where do you come up with these bs. Foot in mouth.

Prazi-pro is a great cure and a preventive of internal parasites. But, if your fish is still eating, try soaking the food in garlic extract. Garlic extract is a good natural cure for internal parasites.

X2 this is excellent advise as usual.. and you're looking for the active ingredient "praziquantel" I've used this without hesitation many a times for my gar and other more delciate species w/out an issue... I would also treat the whole tank. I would order the prazi.. and start with the garlic while you're waiting for it. I personally worm my fish every 6monthes or so since live foods do make it into their tanks. and any new fish can easily bring in IPs as well... Clout works great of external parasites ect and imo a more dangerouse drug to use, and imo not what I'de call "gar safe" as gar are actually sensitive to medications... They do however ime react well to more "holistic" remedies ect.

the lack of eating.. and odd movements suggest intestinal stress... so you may also try stuffing peas into his food.

Biggles.. you should go read in the spiney eels section how many eels have shown the exact same symptoms... and I've suggested this exact same remedy course... and what happened when people did something about it.. and what happened to those that didn't. and yes gar and spiney eels are very different fish.. but i've treated my own floridas for the same symptoms before w/out loseing a single fish. IPs left untreated will kill.

Thanks for the advice. unfortunately he isn't eating, so garlic or medicated foods are out. also prazipro it seems, isn't available in the uk and I am having a hard time finding a uk medication with praziquantel in the ingredients. Anyone know of any that do?

In that case I would suggest the initial dose being a 1/2 dose to see how the fish reacts to it... then subsiquent doses being full strength. I've also found in fish "full" of ips as this may be the case.. a full dose would kill the ips all in one swoop.. which sounds good but then the fish has a rotting mass in their intestinal tract which spells disaster. I would do a cautionary dose and see if the gar expells some ips.. and go from there. Its also possible some other infection... internal issues can be very hard to ID.

it's also plausable he spooked and hurt himself, you can find many vidoes of such fish to compare too.

Ok, Ill try half dose first. I see no outward sighs, of injury, of course that doesn't mean he hasn't injured himself. Do gars generally heal themselves in time? Assuming of course the potntial injury isn't too severe. I realise without knowing the extent of any damage he may have done to himself it is impossible to ay for sure, but generally speaking? Ive seen pic and videos of bent and buckled gars that have hit sides of the tank and damaged their backs, mine doesn't look like this outwardly, btu who knows what is goin on inside. What are my options if the sterazin has no effect? Thanks for the assist!

Ive chickened out of using the sterazin, worried it will do more harm than good. Ive moved him to a (too small really) tank of his own for the time being, raised the temp and added salt. I put some white clouds and some river shrimp in there with him and although he showed a little interest in the shrimp it was like he was too sluggish to catch them. He is in around 18 gallons of water and to begin with I have added 3 teaspoons of salt, plan to add the same tomorrow so as not to do it all at once. is that enough? im gradually raising the temp to 82. Not sure what else I can do not having access to the meds you guys suggest- looked at the sterazin and the active ingredients are different from prazipro. Any other suggestions? anything else I should be doing? There are no fish specialising vets even close to me so that is out too. All suggestions appreciated

Water came from the original tank. filter media taken from the original tank. I can only wizz with the wang I have! No other tanks! I know its not ideal, but its only short term. 10 inch tops gar. 14 inch wide, 29 inch long, plenty of space for it to swim (not that it is a lot)
