I have luckily never had to resort to having to "put my fish down" but if I was presented with such a situation I would probably go for the blunt force trauma to the head. I used to live in Florida and fished alot for supper and before I would even begin "cleaning" the fish I would use that method so that the fish wouldn't have to suffer the pain of me removing all of their scales or skin ect.. It is a hard decision to make with any pet but seeing as I get quite attached to my little fishy buddies I would definately want whatever method chosen to be as quick as possible. My suggestion to you though would be what many have already suggested... Don't give up yet, there still may be hope.

Cut the head off then hit it with a hammer.
After that, put it in a blender mixed with vodka and clove oil.
Turn on blender.
Take the blender off the counter and put it in the freezer.
Freeze for two days.
Take it out of freezer and place in a bag and hit it over the counter.
Dispose of in trash.

if you buy a fish, your taking the responsiblity for it, if you dont think you can care for it in the long run DONT GET IT.... if you have problems with it sell it or get it its own tanks... if you kill it EAT IT.. theres no reason to buy a fish just so you can kill it
Bashing the fishs head on the counter is probably the best way. I wouldn't go the freezing route. Its a hard thing to do but most of us have been there.
