I am a complete novice to fish kepping. My mom has always tried but they always died because our well water was to acidy. Now that I can use city water from tap I want my first tank. Was woundering what kind of freshwater fish would be easy at first and was colorful. I love colorful fish. Also right now I have 5 gallon tank that was my moms but plan on building my own big tank. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks

In a 5 gallon tank I would go with a few neon tetras. They can be hard to keep if everything isnt right, but if you hang around here you'll be just fine. Be sure to search the setup forum for advice on starting and cycling tanks, and ask any questions if you feel the need. No question is dumb....we all started from somewhere!!!

Welcome to MFK!

what about mollies, would they be ok in a 5 gallon untill I get something bigger.

I would agree w/ neons. mollies tend to bore me, My oscars enjoy them though.

I would recommend ditching the 5 as a production tank, perhaps as a hospital or fry tank if you will be breeding. Its harder to balance a smaller tank.

Good luck on you new hobby, stick with it & you will have hours of enjoyment once you catch on.

Good point lil_stinker (and welcome to MFK)

It is actually easier to maintain a large tank than a small one IMO.

Hi bethie!Welcome to fishkeeping and MFK.You should check this place out often. There's a LOT cool and knowledgeable people here.As far as the 5gal tank, a betta, paradise fish, or dwarf gourami might be cool until you get something bigger.:D

welcome!
in your 5 gallon tank, you may want to try some platies as they are small, hardy, and come in a variety of colors. i would select 3 or 4. maybe 1 male and 3 females. they more than likely would breed as would the mollies mentioned. that will also give you a good experience with fish keeping (and give you a reason to buy another tank ;)). a pair of dwarf gouramis, as mentioned, would be a nice choice also. just make sure your tank is well filtered and you do not over feed your fish or leave the light on too much. waste can pile up in such a small aquarium and cause you to have to clean more than you should. good luck in the hobby! :welcome:
