i dont work in an lfs but i love it when noobs insist they are right like in an lfs by me one of the guys i know who works there had to tell this woman that an oscar would not live in a 10g and she insisted she had friends who were 'fish experts' who told her it could. Anyway she got soooooo anoyed when he wouldnt sell it to her and started ranting about how they sold poor quality clown fish which died as soon as you got them he asks her what the salinity and size of the tank are and she says "what do you mean by salinity" and he says how much salt do you put in she just looks at him really strangely and he explains about how they need salt, but she still insists that they can be acclimatised to freshwater and just leaves.

would have LOVED to be the fly on the wall for that conversation!

I have a fish book that was probably written sometime in the 50s or 60s, where the author does say that clowns can be acclimated to freshwater ... that's probably where these people get this garbage from ...

if you look long enough and hard enough, you can find some source that will support even the most ridiculous notions ... like that an Oscar will be okay in a 30G tank ...

I was in petco today giving in two fish that wouldn't work in my tank...A big 6" gold gourami and an "Algae eater" (not a pleco). So I took the bags up to the counter and the guy picked the gourami up and said "Woah! That's a gourami!" -:screwy: Orly captain obvious?- then continued to say, "Wow. That is one nice 'Chilid'"

Now....idk if gouramis are members of the cichlid family or not? So could someone enlighten me on this?
But I know its not pronounced "Chilid".

A shoal of neon tetras in a show tank.
And a customer only picked one... alongside a silver arowana, a florida gar and a red sev...

Poor neon tetra... Must have already been eaten in the bag

i work at a small one over the summer. people really need to study fish before they buy them.

a man walked in one time saying he was going to set up a ten gallon tank and he wanted to buy fish for it today. i asked the man ''how long have you been cycling it?'', he tells me ''i aint added no water to it yet. im'a buy the fishes and put some water in dat' tank when i get home". i kindly explained to the man how the whole proccess works and let him know that if he wanted these fish today, they would all die. he insisted on buying fish today. i wanted to refuse to sell him the fish, but my employer told me that i had to sell the man whatever he wanted. the man continues to look around and says ''what these little red fin thangs?'', ''rainbow sharks, sir'', ''SHARKS?? give me a dozen of them thangs!". pleading with the man to not buy these fish (for obvious reasons) he refuses to take no for an answer. however, i did warn him that our 1 week policy would not apply to him because of his foolish mistake. within 24 hours he returns with a bag full of dead rainbow sharks demanding his money back.

another story-

a man walks in and asks me if i could have a silver arowana shipped in for him because he wants another one. i told him ''sure, but first, what size tank do you plan to keep it in?'', he replies ''my new 30 gallon tank, its GIGANTIC!!". of course i informed him of the fact that they can reach lengths of 40"+, need a minimum of 3'+ turning space and a tank thats 8'+ long, and that they grow very quickly (1-2" per month). he says "thats bull****, ive had my aro in a 5 gallon for 3 years"

so this guy comes in today, he is looking at fish he asks me if we need any help around the store (idk why he would ask me this as i am the youngest one working there and have no say in management). I was considering about asking my boss he seemed like a nice guy BUT THENNN he asks me if he can keep chinchillas with his community fish...

He could, if he got the chinchillas life jackets and added filtration for the increased bio load.
