help identify this cichlid because i have no idea

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
All this talk about Red Devils going psycho. I have owned and spawned Devils and other Amphs for years and have never had issues. I currently have a WC Amph Hogaboomarum pair 10" M/6" F, an Amph Xiloaensis pair 6" M/6" F, a cream sickle devil male 9", a barred red Red Devil female 9", a barred blue Red Devil male 9", 2 x Texas male 11", Grammode male 7", Kraussi male 12", and Loisellei male 9"/female 5". All sharing the same show tank. The Hogas spawn constantly, cause the male Hoga is alpha male in the tank. But no problems. All of these fish have been together since they were young. I guess its all in how you raise them, and what you feed them.

I'm not even going to mention what I have sharing my other show tank. :)

But enjoy the MiDevil. Personally, I like the true Red Devils better, they look much nicer and have a better personality.

i have a lfs midas /red devil who knows but it is 7 inches and the biggest fish in m y 180 g all the other fish are 4-5 inches and the red devil is the king of the tank but he runs the tank in a peacful way were he doesnt ever fight or ever kill a fish and no one messes with him ... if someone bites him he will make the other fish swim away fast the nicest fish i have ever ownd and a leader

Yeah but in what size tank? In a big enough tank I agree that even red devil, midas etc can be relatively peaceful. However in a 55 gallon there's no way it'll work.

Good Job researching what the fish need before you buy them.

^^^^^^ smh this why I hate MFK sometimes!!! :irked:

He could have been a bit more tactful but honestly its not going to work, not even for a little while so the original poster is better off knowing this early on.

I agree...he could have been more tactful but that doesn't mean what he said isn't true. He is exactly right, in a 55 gallon tank I'd be surprised if the JD would allow other large cichlids and JD's aren't even close to RD/Midas when it comes to aggression. Even the most peaceful Midevil will become a killer in a tank that is too small and a 55 is definitely too small.

I am glad to hear that the OP has listened to the given advice and will be getting a new tank for the midevil. I just hope the new tank is large enough. If the midevil is going to be kept alone then I would recommend a bare minimum of a 75 gallon tank.

:)

It's really not even going to come down to aggression. With that bioload in a 55 water quality will be the killer not any of the tank inhabitants

I know man, me too. The truth sucks. It really sucks when people tell what is going to happen if something isnt changed.

I know the truth bothers you. Look at your balzini/ firemouth thread. You got countless advice from people telling you it wouldnt work and not to do it and you still kept saying you were going to try it and that people were being rude etc.

Were not here to caress fragile egos and play therapist for people that were pulled off the teat too early. You ask a question, you get an answer.

Once youre here a good bit longer longer than 3 weeks, youll see the pattern that threads take and be able to help from the start, need be, and at the same time learn how a forum works. Until then, dont be so sensitive and try and figure out who knows what theyre talking about and who just likes to put their 2 cents into everything and ESPECIALLY things they know nothing about...and those that make emotionally based ccomments about hating MFK because of truthful, blunt posts.

So you COMPLETELY overstock your tank to prevent the fish from being able to move around or claim territory...and you call it a "Show Tank"?

What size is this "Show" tank that sounds so ridiculously overstocked?

Unless your tank is at least a 400+ gallon, thats the wrong way to house fish for their benefit. Thats what youre SHOWING...how NOT to house fish properly.

And yea, Ill bet you arent going to mention what is sharing in your other tank. You dont feel like being grilled by the 95% of us that know the correct way to keep fish. I dont blame you.

Unless your advice is to cram too many fish into too small of a tank for housing a RD to work, then your comments on this thread are pretty much null and void.

And its not in "how you raise them or what you feed them" at all. Its if you want mediocre, ripped fin fish that are just getting by or if you want healthy, thriving fish in an environment they obviously enjoy being in. Overstocked tanks only provide the first option.

A Red Devil, in a regular community that people who care about their fish keep, wont work 99% of the time, plain and simple.

Some people kill me with their thinking that fish or spawning fish is some sort of "status symbol" or gives them some sort of extended machismo or bragging rights that matter.:screwy:

I still don't understand the gar in the 55. Unless he is tiny. Gars don't bend like Knife fish, they need a lot of room to turn around.
How can you keep a gar in a 12" wide tank?

the gar is only 4 inches still.i jus bought a 125 gallon tank and im building a custom stand for it.so once im done building it all the fish will be happy

whoa. lol hardcore on the keyboard up in here. just give the OP what he needs to know, then be done. who cares if someone questions your credibility on here? lol dont let mfk become xbox live for grown-ups. if you do, then mods will close threads and nobody learns anything besides who's mother is fatter.

Well said, and understood. I guess most of us on here know what comments to pay attention to for that advice or answers we seek. And what comments come from complete tools. I will continue to try and help out as much as I can, and hopefully some of you can learn off of me as I may learn off of you. I will try very hard to not let the tools get under my skin.

And as soon as the moderators allow me to post my pics, I would love to show off my collection. Mind you, my pictures are so inferior to those of Aqua MoJo, but I am learning and slowly getting better.
