Arowana tragedy - unbelievable leap

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I kind of call BS that your Aro is a 23". In 15 months, no way could a 2" Silver Aro grow to 23" in a 55g. It looks much smaller than 23", Around 16"-18".
Look at the picture again. The aro was laid on an angle, not straight. If you project it in a straight line, it's close to 2 tiles, 24", so no, it's not bs. Who said it's bs for a silver aro to gain 21in in 15 month? Don't they grow at the rate of 1.5in to 2in per month? And what does 55gal tank have anything to do with the growing of a fish? It shows that the OP does know how to take care of his fish!

Hence why I said probably could've been avoided rather than completely avoided. In majority of cases, when you provide ample space, they have less chances of jumping. Im pretty sure you would also agree though, a 12" wide 55 gallon is not suitable for what the OP claims to be a 23" aro. The bigger tank should've been ready a long while ago.
"Could have been avoid" doesn't mean "will avoid" and that's why I said "there's no guarantee," if you like to go back and forth on it. Provide ample space doesn't mean less chance of jumping. Some member even stated in this thread that he witness arowana jumps in the wild. Arowana jump! That's their nature. My arowana in 600gal tank, 4ft wide still jump. Look up JohnPTC thread. His arowana still jump in a 10K tank. All tanks are not suitable, whether it's 12" wide or 120" wide.

To each his own I guess. They do jump naturally, thats a given, but the small space is an accepted factor in further inducing it. Either way lid should have been secure enough for it not to be able to jump out. Saying that no tank is suitable is a bit unreasonable. If no tank is suitable, then you're basically saying johnPTC's 10k tank is just as bad as that tiny 55 gallon. So why dont we just all keep em in 55s and save ourselves the trouble of upgrading?

"No tank is suitable" does not mean "JohnPTC's 10K tank is just as bad as that tiny 55 gallon." Stop putting words in other person mouth! A tank, whether 1 gallon, or 100,000 gallon, is still a tank. It's not a pond, a lake, a river, or an ocean. If you can't tell the different between a tank from a pond, a lake, or a river.... then you need help.

But you never said it doesn't compare to a pond, a lake, a river, or an ocean. You just said its "not suitable." Obviously a glass box will never compare to the size of a natural body of water but to a certain extent tanks are still atleast acceptable. Either way, my point is, had he upgraded earlier, the chances of this happening would have been slimmer and that this upgrade should have happened quite a long time ago so that the tank is still "practical" so to say compared to the aro's size.

I never said it doesn't compare to a pond, a lake, a river, or an ocean, because I didn't compare a glass box to the size of a natural body of water, and FYI, a pond is not a natural body of water! I said, "All tanks are not suitable." Obviously, you can't tell the different, and may need some professional help. At least, you acknowledged a tank is a glass box, but just too fixiate on the size! Just think for a second, if a tank is suitable, then it doesn't have LID(S)! There you go!
Perhaps, you, and some of the members here, have been told by other your whole life, and can't wait for a chance to tell other your "point." As the OP stated, it's a tragedy, and it's simply a tragedy. If you use some common sense, there is noone would want to spend money on a fish, time and effort to raise it for months, if not years, and wants it dead. The OP did take some measure in upgrading, but thing happens. All the "woulda" or "shoulda" doesn't change what already happened, and there was no guarantee on whether the fish would jump if it was in a bigger tank.
