I'm thinking about buying black substrate, and I heard it can make cichlids like dovii's, jaguars, and red terrors look so much better?

If anything, could you post a pic of your cichlid living in black substrate?
thanks...

Sorry no pic but black gravel is all I ever use. My roseline shark pack look great flying over the black gravel.

My smaller cichlids(apistos, rams, kribs) look better on black substrate, but my Festae and Fedddy looked way too dark. Those two look much better on a lighter(sand) substrate. Festae especially

I tried black sand and I didn't like it. It made all of my fish way too dark. Right now I have a natural pea gravel and a brown 3d background and it looks great. Plus the black isnt natural enough for me.

x2. Tried it and didn't like it for the same reasons. Fish were way to dark, both the fish and tank were unnatural looking. I prefer light or natural colored substrate.

I agree all black doesn't look good I tried it and was not happy with the results. PFS straight or mixed with black sand 70/30 is much nicer IMO.

I've only used black gravel with the fish in my avatar. My jag was kept on natural and couldn't look any better, I think putting him on black would of only mudded him up.

As much as I love black backgrounds, I too prefer a lighter substrate.
Too much black can make a fish morph into darker tones while attempting to blend into their environment.

I think they look better on dark substrate. But....I like the Crayola colored sand, then it's easy to see the 'poo' and easier to clean it.
