770 Gallon Monster Setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's funny because I got rid of 400 kois for someone this past weeekend. Ranging from 4" to 12". They were from an unwanted spawn. You need to get Indian Mahseers. They are cold water and inexpensive when you buy them small. There are many different Indian sp. you can get....mussullah, morsal, neo hex., neo stra., putitora, khudree. Spinabarbus are cool too.

"got rid" of 400 kois?...that's a lot of toilet flushing.

Do any of these Mahseers not grow over 2 feet? All the pix I've seen and info I've been able to find say that they grow 30" plus. I don't want to buy anything I can't keep for life.

Make it a reef. Would be epic, but you wouldnt be able to stay in the same room with the tank for very long, the lighting required would give you a sunburn LOL

LOL- You trying to get me to go into bankruptcy? I am pretty confident in saying that I don't think I will ever do Saltwater. I definitely will never mess with trying to recreate a reef...especially not with a tank this size; wayyy too much work and way too expensive. I think these reef guys are nuts! I respect them, but think they are crazy. These Monster Reef Keepers make us MFK guys look like amateurs with the complexity of their setups and the time, effort and $$$ it takes to maintain them.

goldfish? I would kill myself :D

If I go with tropical fish, I may die of a heart attack after opening the first utility bill in the winter. I think I might just stock it with goldfish for now, and buy some heaters and try to maintain 78F when it gets colder to see how often the heaters cycle. I get the following cost/month based on the number of hours the heaters are "on."
12 hours a day = $215/month
10 hours a day = $180/month
8 hours a day = $144/month
6 hours a day = $108/month

These numbes are using 1500watts of heaters (at $0.40kwh), which might not even be enough. The numbers above would obviously get even uglier if I had to run more wattage.

I know what you mean, but after looking at the numbers, goldfish are starting to look a lot more attractive.

Every time i see a deep tank like this all i can amagine is cleaning the tank and how that is even possible.

Heat it and put some cichla in there! Your tank is amazing and it needs some amazing fish.

with the room being insulated i really think you can sustain 78 degrees fairly economicly but great idea to try it this winter ..I really think the heat generated by the pump and the tank being warm to begin with you won't have to run those heaters 24 /7 like i had to last winter in my garage with no insulation i am insulating this year for sure !!!LOL!!

if your so concerned about heating cost go native, a bunch of trout, pickerel, channel/blue cats or various bass would look nice in that tank.

50" grabber (pik stik), a DIY 50" gravel vac and a Magnavore 10 should make maintenance easier. Mask and snorkel as a last resort- haha. I don't think it will be too tough, but time will tell.

I would love to have some cichla, but going to test heating the water first. If I keep goldfish for the time being and my bill gets crazy in the wintertime, I can just unplug the heaters and not worry about the fish dying on me. If I have a tank full of cichla (or any tropical fish for that matter) and my electric bill starts running $200+, I'm screwed...gotta keep heating it. Maybe I should start a collection to heat my tank?...:naughty:

That's my hope. I was actually thinking about running water cooled (submersible) pumps in the winter that should help raise the temps a few degrees. I don't think the Hammerhead Gold adds much heat to the water, but being an air (fan) cooled pump, I think it may add a little heat to the room...it runs pretty hot to the touch.

I am open to going native, but can't seem to find any good info on what is legal to keep in California? If I catch a bluegill or a green sunfish at a local lake, can I keep it? I don't want to break any laws and have to worry about getting in trouble.

I was never a big fan of natives (I'm colorblind so they all looked drab to me), but I recently visited a link I saw here to a native dealer who had quite a few sunfish that I thought looked quite stunning. I don't know much about their needs, or who sold them, but if someone who resorts to keeping Mbuna just to see colorful fish thought they were quite stunning then they're worth looking into. Sorry for not being able to find the link though, but I wish you the best of luck.

Look, I will drive over there and give you what you paid for the tank. No big deal. I will stock it properly and take some pictures for you :)

I'm sure he's just kidding about the goldfish. Right?
