What is your policy on tipping wait staff?

If you have a job that relies of tips as a majority of your income then your attitude and service towards the customers should reflect how much you would like to receive. If you act like you don't want to be there and you don't care then your tip will reflect that, but if you are friendly and have a positive attitude then your tip will be significantly bigger. I've tipped well even though I've had a bad meal because it wasn't the servers fault, and I've also stiffed a waitress on a great meal because she was a complete ***** and had the attitude that she was only worth $2.38/hr. A tip should never be automatically given, but is something that needs to be earned.

I allways tip atleast 20% no matter what but more if i have good service. I am a chef and know waitresses make chump change at 2.38 or a little more. So any one that doesnt tip is a ass. If you are not going to tip then go to burger king.

I don't even know if it's worth it for me to respond to this. no offense to you personally but some things are so dumb you just gotta leave it alone. but, wow

meh, i'll at least say this. i grew up pretty dirt poor, i took it upon myself to go to college and work from the bottom to get where i'm at. I've worked in the food industry before so no one can tell me i don't understand. but i pay my damn taxes just like everybody else so i'll eat where i damn please. just because i don't agree with the concept of tipping (and let me point out that i do tip, mainly 5-10%, never over 15%, sometimes nothing) doesn't automatically make me an ass.

I tip at least 20%. It is common knowledge that waiters make the majority of their income through tips. The same goes for bartenders and hair stylists. It is easy to suggest that these people should pick a different job if they want more money. The fact is that these jobs/services are necessary and result in employing a large percentage of the work-force. I believe tipping less than 15% speaks to the character of the tipper, more than the service of the employee.

i was a cook before and have washed dishes and have bussed tables. i got tipped occasionally for bussing. you know what i did when i felt the pay was crappy? i found a better job. i moved on.

about all the jobs that are needed like you said, well imagine if everyone stopped tipping. wow, you know what that would do? that means the employers would have to stop paying them assuming they make tips and give them at least minimum wage. i'd rather go that route

btw, i think people who judge people like me for my opinion on this subject tells me about their character as well

I have buds that work as waiters.. They tell me that most waiters make 2 something an hour, but with tips, they make well over minimum wage. I used to tip pretty well, 25% regardless of how the service was.. that was before I knew most waiters made 100+ a night, cash. If you aren't happy when people don't tip you, get another job.

this is really the bottom line for me. and don't criticize or judge me just because i don't agree with the whole concept of tipping

like a previous poster has said, tell me where it's my problem that they are struggling just to get by, shoot, first 20 years of my life was a struggle. do something about it

btw, people who spit in other people's food deserve to get spit in their mouth 10 times. that's a real jackass move in my opinion

This is exactly how I feel. Your job is to serve and be happy. It would be like me hiring an aquarist who didn't know how to clean a fish tank. If you don't do your job well (in any industry), don't expect to make good money.

Did someone get a new pair of shoes? When you walk, all I hear is "CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP".

For those wondering who I'm talking about, if the shoe fits....

hehehe It doesn't affect me either anymore but I waited tables and bartended when I was going to school. If someone didn't tip or tipped poorly when I waited tables, I still had to tip out 3% of his tab total to the bartender and bus staff....so I could actually lose money. That person would definitely eat a huge green lugi next time he came in...I don't forget a face.

 j/k.....or am I?

I have never waited or worked in any part of the food trade but I have worked from the bottom in other sectors and have also grown up quite poor so I understand the need to work hard to earn your crust and I also know that bad work does not reep many rewards. If you want to be tipped then you better be acting very professional. I don't agree with automatic tipping, it has to be earned. All this talk of automatic tipping is crazy, could be because I am a Brit though as tipping is for a reward here and waiters/waitresses know this.

Why would you reward bad behaviour? That is stupidity and being an ass, it is also probably the biggest reason that some staff are so rude because they haven't had to earn their tips. The fact is if you are lazy, rude or disrespectful you deserve the sackbecause that trade obviously isn't for you.
My cousin is a waiter and his good manners and respect earn him £200+ in tips almost every Saturday night and around £50+ on other nights.

Regarding your comment I have bolded..

Do you really thing that if everyone stopped tipping, and the employers started paying them at least min wage, that we (consumers) wouldnt be paying the difference? If that were the case, everything we purchased would be MUCH more expensive than what tip you may leave. You are either young or have no grasp on economics in a capitalistic society, or both.

yea i admit i didn't think about that. i wouldn't be able to get into how it would affect the economy since i don't follow or know enough about how it would all work out. i'll assume you have a good grasp on it and know how it would affect everyone. but for me, personally, i couldn't care less if restuarants were like fast food where they call your name or number and you go pick up your food from the counter.

besides, it wouldn't affect me all that much at all since i don't ever go to bars or go out to restuarants much at all.
