What is your policy on tipping wait staff?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Regarding your comment I have bolded..

Do you really thing that if everyone stopped tipping, and the employers started paying them at least min wage, that we (consumers) wouldnt be paying the difference? If that were the case, everything we purchased would be MUCH more expensive than what tip you may leave. You are either young or have no grasp on economics in a capitalistic society, or both.

I don't think costs would have to go up that much, the minimum wage for a server is $2.13 while standard minimum wage is $7.25. That is a difference of just over $5.00. How many tables can one person serve in an hour? I know it will vary greatly but it will usually be more than 5 tables at a time. That will make the cost increase per table less than $1.00 which is quite a bit less than a standard tip so it would actually save most customers money.

Typical talented wait staff I know aren't going to work for $7.25/hr. I know I wouldn't have when I was in food-service. Why would someone wear their back out carrying trays of food & drink and strive to be nice and polite to (mostly impolite) people for minimum wage? Not to mention the stress of keeping up with the needs of up to 10 different groups of people. You can go work at Mcdonalds and make more than minimum wage, all while sitting in a chair punching buttons on a computer screen with a rude attitude.

Waiting tables well is a very tough occupation. Those who have done it know. Those who have done it and do not think it is tough, have not done it correctly.

I tip:
15%-20% at restaurant
10% at buffet
20% to barber or hair stylist (my wife's hair stylist love it when I call him to make appointment!)

Does anyone tip the mailman?

I was a bartender for many years as a part time job. On average, I would pull in around $200-300/night (Worked 10pm-close Thurs, Fri, Sat nights) after payouts to the waitresses/doorman. I have also waited and bussed tables. I agree that tips should be earned and not expected. But the one thing I hate to see is people treating the waitstaff like their personal punching bag. Waitstaff are not our servants, rather they serve us. I know it sounds like the same thing but it isn't. I always say please and thank you whenever they bring things to the table and if one of the party that I am eating with is rude, I apologize for thier behavior.

As far as treating customers differently whenever they didn't tip, I never really noticed that much unless I saw them put a tip in $10 or bigger for a drink. I look at it this way, when you work in a customer service related field you are going to have good customers and bad customers (doens't make them a bad customer if they don't tip, we have all been short on cash!!!). Treat everyone with excellent service and you can't go wrong. Guess that is why I walked away with a full tip jar every night!!!

I bet it is! Those that get visibly angry over no tip are usually the ones who earn a sucky wage....

besides, it wouldn't affect me all that much at all since i don't ever go to bars or go out to restuarants much at all.

Then why bolster your comments... Tipping has been a service FOR MANY MANY Decades IN THIS Country, I am not talking about at Starbucks, or the Donut shop. I only Tip at resturants and the bar tender. If it is a buffet syle resturant I will only tip 2.00, because THEY Are making full pay. I am tipping them because they kept my glass full.

ALSO this has nothing to do with education..Some do this while in college, some do it because they enjoy it as well.

If you're lucky you get 3 tables to cover in one night, maybe 4. Most customers spend at least 1 hour per table, and that may vary from customer to customer.
If it is a weekend handling 5 tables at a time IS A MAJOR deal.

why comment? why not? it's the topic of the thread and this is a discussion.

and just because this country has done it for decades means i gotta automatically agree with it? and if i don't, it means i'm cheap or i'm an ass or ignorant?
