What is your policy on tipping wait staff?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hahahah!! damn, what does an ugly chick get??!!!!

i'm blind when it comes to tipping. ugly, georgeous, skinny, fat, black, white, brown, yellow,............... to get a huge tip the waitress would have to feed me and give me a lapdance

that's only 10 percent, pretty standard for most people. were you with the wife or you'd have tipped her slightly more?

no, i would tip the same. only reason i tipped 4 bucks was because i got a $5 bill and four $1 bills. if i would've got $8, I would've tipped $3

I hope we're still friends after this because it's nothing personal.....but YES it makes you, and anyone for that matter, a cheapskate.

(This is not meant as an attack and I'm sorry if it offends you. Just stating the facts, and I have other cheapskate friends btw.)

yea we're still buddies, nothing is taken personal, we're all just having a discussion and you don't lose friends over a debate about something silly like tipping.

but i think you're wrong in your judgement. i have given to charities and donate to orgs that help feed homeless in my area and i've donated to funds that go to help children's hospitals. and i've also started donating to a program that sends toys, hygiene products and things like that to children in africa during christmas time. i started that africa one two years ago and plan on doing it again this year. i also have no problem loaning out money to people i trust and are close to me. i've loaned out over a couple thousand dollars to people and have not gotten paid back to this day. my point is, disagreeing about tipping doesn't automatically make someone cheap or selfish.

Another reason I don't like tipping, is that's it's biased towards a few industries, while others are completely ignored. What's so special about somebody that's supposed to fetch your food and drinks? Would you also tip your doctor? Dentist? What about your plumber? Or the guy that fixed your AC? Or the guy who replaced the roof on your house? Or what about the guy that came to hook up your cable or satellite dish? Your mechanic? The guy who bags your groceries? Your butcher? The delivery guy who brings packages to your door? And why not the salesmen who sold you your car? How much time did he spend with you answering questions, taking you on a test drive? Waiting around while you 'kick the tires'??? Why not those guys? And why not tip your cell phone company? They're providing a truly invaluable service.

See what I mean? This is why I view tipping a such a stupid practice, because people think only waiters and barbers should get tipped. If you really think about, any time you spend money, you're getting a service. Whether it be a purchase or a bill you receive in the mail. Where do you draw the line?

^ good one, i was gonna mention this before but i have a hunch what the responses would be so i felt i didn't need to but glad you did

Jose is another one. :)

lol hey what's up Jose, I didn't see you there. :grinno::grinno::grinno:

I don't care if you do or not, it doesn't effect me one way or another. If you work for tips it's just part of your profession to get tipped well, poor or somewhere in between. Deal with it.

LOL I chimed in back a few pages ago. Even though I'm sitting here talking crap behind my keyboard, I still tip when I go out to eat. I don't tip bartenders though. Don't like none of them. The thought of having to give them a 100% tip the first time just so they acknowledge me the second time around is mind boggling. I draw the line at waiters/waitresses. That's it.

Well you put up a hell of an argument but I'm biased because long ago I was in the industry. It's been so long that even I've gotten cheaper over the years when it comes to tipping.

i've had my share of that industry as well when i didn't have an education and a job, i did what i had to do but i felt like the pay wasn't worth the labor so like i said earlier, i did something about it and i found another job.

When I worked as a server, there were a few things that I did to ensure good tips.

1.I bought high end tools of the trade. Mont Blanc pen for the customer to sign the credit slip, a very nice jet butane lighter for cigarettes, a top of the line pair of ortho shoes and freshly dry cleaned shirts for each shift.

2.Did my very best to be personable without infringing or getting personal.

3.Maintained a view that the shift was not a success dictated by what came from each table on an individual basis, yet, rather at the end of the night sitting with the other servers at the cash out table, then stories would come forth as customers were no longer in the place. I really could not bring myself to see tips as a right, over being a priviledge. It all averaged out in the end.

4.Honed my sales skills so that I could sell ice to an eskimo, after all being an order taker does not accomplish anything. Being a salesman now there is where the real deal is. The higher the amount of enjoyment my clients had usually meant a higher tab at the end of it all.

Did quite well in the industry and usually netted 150 sometimes as much as 400/night.
