Love Big Tanks and Big Fish BUT :)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, time to start stocking this baby.

Ditch the rocks and get drift wood, will look more natural, and cleaner imo...I saw you get some nice drift wood pieces in another thread while ago, maybe use those?

Ok so the first 4 fish went in. I had them in a 65g in my living room then moved them to a 150g grow out that I have here at the restaurant and they were not liking it in there due to the other fish that were in with them(juvi red terror). So I put them in this tank. I will take a picture later and post it up.

It looks to me that I have 2 male and 2 female. I decided I would take a look at the fish I already own to start stocking the tank as they are used to the water in my tanks. Also I have a few fish that are what I would call the flitter group. These guys are totally peaceful and do not get big at all so they fit the tank nicely.

I also have a mini catfish at home that I will be putting in here, though I have no idea what it is called. I do know it does not get any bigger than 3 inches and it is a mid level swimmer.

Probass, one of the main reasons why I am not going with wood and such in this tank is that in the future I will transfer the concept of what I am doing here to one of my 300g. Since the rock is baserock for a sw tank I am actually going to convert this tank to an insane reef flitter tank when I move them to the big tank. So using the rock in here will make it just that much easier when time comes for that.

With the placement of the filters I wanted to get a moderate to good flow that went top/mid level from the right front side to the back right and then along the back of the tank to push in a contstant steady oval, so I moved the in tank filter lower and aimed the flow to be hitting the middle of the back wall. I can tell from the way the surface is moving that there is a nice circular going on. I also aimed the one filter to break the water on the back wall, so I am going to see if that works well enough for gas exchange. If not I will probably put a power head on the right hand side.

Ok so here are the pics.

With the festivum. I really wanted to have at least 7-8 of them but they are not so easy to find here, so I got to thinking of what I would put with them. I had already decided that Bloodfin Tetra were one of the fish that were going in here as I love the splash of red and the basic silver body. I decided this afternoon that I was going to go to the petsmart to take a look at what they had on special.

I also got to thinking that I would drop in some real plants if I could find some that I liked there. To that end I also decided that I would pull my rock out to thin it down a bit and to keep it from being contaminated with real plant matter and so be a hassle for future use. I am however going to dedicate 3-5 of the big pieces to this tank as I like the way it looks and I especially like its ability to become a beneficial bacteria factory.

So here are some pics that I took tonight.

Here is a close up of one of the fest.

I also really like the way they swim as a school so here are a couple of pics of that.

As I was looking about I noticed in their angel fish tank 3 angels that caught my eye. Hard to get a pic that shows it clearly, but, 2 of them have total silver bodies with black tinted top and bottom and tail fins, and the third is pure yellow with a redish tint to the fins. Now I know they are young angels but they seem a lot more translucent than any of the other angels so I picked them up. They do a great job of joining with the festivum and swim as a pack.

Just a pic to try to show what I am talking about with the angel.

They had bloodfin tetra on for .78/ so I picked up 10 of them, here are some pics.

They also had some plants that were different that what they usually carry, so I bought them and here they are. I have no idea what they are called and will see how they grow.

this last plant was sort of a bonus plant cause it has some globules of mystery apple snail eggs on it, so here is to hoping that they hatch and I get some free snails.

I also made the decision that I will actually leave this 100g as my flitter tank and turn the 10ft 300g into something else. To this end I will photo doc the growth of this tank as it develops.

I am going to wait till monday to bring the couple of fish that I have at home that will go in here. I am going to need some help with an ID on the one catfish as I can not find it and have no idea what it is. The other one I just can not remember the name of it, but, I am pretty sure someone will know.

Lookin good, still thinking about orange lazer corys? 5 of those, and 5 of another species, maybe sterbai with their contrasting orange fins would look great in there! Still has lots of room as you well know. Also I think it looks much nicer with the plants, especially if it takes off. Also the second to last plant looks like dwarf hair grass, which will eventually spread, but if I were you Id buy a package of two, they sell at petsmart out of the plant tank in the plastic bags or whatever, break into clumps and spread around. This will form a carpet and I think would look nice. Tank is still begging for a piece of drift wood imo :)

I AM SO PUMPED RIGHT NOW!!!

So a student who graduated from the U of R is going back to China end of Nov. He sold me this stuff for $500 and best part it flows right into my future plans. While it may seem to expensive for what there is you gotta remember we talking 2 full on sw set up complete and 1 full on fw complete and a quarentine tank set up full on.

Leaving the town, has to find my fishes a new home, price obo,
saltwater fish: pair of clowns, yellow tang, yellowwatchman, star & stripe puffer, green spot puffer, Banggai Cardinal and starfish , cleaning shrimp~
freshwater fish: small angel fishes

also ever stuff going to cheap sale` 3-29G tanks, 1-10G tank~
better to sell them as a set, or $500 for all stuff, including fishes and equipment (power head, filter, heater, rocks, sand, medic stuff), stander free~~

well the funny thing is that I actually had a thought like that, and here is why.

On another fish board there are these people who seem to treat their fish in ways that just make me shake my head. Making threads along the lines of OH NO MY GUPPPY DIED etc. etc.

So I was thinking I could make a thread like this and then finish the thread off with something like. I decided to put my juvi snook in the tank and boy can that fish extend its mouth, you should see when it eats others. And post a vid of it :P

Yet, that being said. The fish that are going to be goin in this tank will be a little to valuable for me to do that.

Edit: I am going to call the festivum my lawnmower fish as they have started to go to town trimming the grass.

Ok I tore down my tank at home to get the fish I wanted out and put them in. Here are the pics

Now, since I have the above deal on sw tanks coming i decided to mod the tank a bit and add some wood. Here is what the new full tank shot looks like.

I have no idea what the fish is called but they just seemed to match the festivum very well, so I put them on hold last week and picked them up tonight
