Love Big Tanks and Big Fish BUT :)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looking good! As far as the aquascape, the only thing I would suggest is something tall (driftwood, rocks, fake plants) that reaches or nearly reaches the top - it seems a little "low" in my view.

Just curious - Do the shells and limestone affect your pH much? What is your water like to start with?

man unless those salt tanks are all nice brand koralia powerheads nice skimmers a LOT of good rock and really nice halide or t5h0 lighting dual bulb, $500 is a ton for that

Ok I tore down my tank at home to get the fish I wanted out and put them in. Here are the pics

Unknown catfish

That is a porthole catfish. If you keep them in groups of 3 or more they have quite the personality!! that is a normal one they also come in "flag tale" variety which are really cool too!!

Ditch the rocks and get drift wood, will look more natural, and cleaner imo...I saw you get some nice drift wood pieces in another thread while ago, maybe use those?

^ I agree.

Also, I saw that you said you were using a saltwater light? Do you happen to know the K rating? Anything over 10,000K isn't really going to help your plants grow much. You really need something around the 6,500K mark. I would suggest SunPaq Dual Daylights 6700K/10,000K.

The average ph of water here in 2010 according to our city engineers and water dept was 7.45, with some places going as high as 7.56 with others as low as 7.15. Here at the university it taps out at almost close to 7.4.

One thing I forgot to mention with my reason for using the dead rock was 2 fold. I wanted to cleanse the rock by having it leech out in the water for a couple of weeks, yet, I also wanted to have the walter receive a heavy shock treatment with salt before I put fish in so that the salt could work its magic on any baddies that might be there. And with the water changes dropping the salinity off until I got it fish ready.

The fish club auction goes this weekend and there are people in our club who specialize in plants, so I am really hoping to get some nice swords and such. When I put the fake plants in at the start I did to help the cycle get rolling due to them being from other active tanks. Since most of the fish in this tank will leave the plants alone(dang lawn mower festivum HAHAHahhah) I am going to go all live plants. I am thinking that the sw t5 light that I have on the tank should simulate sunlight well enough to make the plants grow.

If the plants go well in this tank, it will be the first time ever for me that I have been able to get them to do so mostly because my other fish I keep destroy them and eat them. Kinda funny to watch a big cichlid stand off with a plant and say YOU LOOKIN AT ME! Only to rush the plant and rip it to shreds for no reason. I can understand when a pacu mows down cause that is what they eat, but, I just can not understand why a fish would literally attack a plant for the sake of attacking it.

I forgot to mention that I put my order in for the first batch of neat little flitters that I will be getting this week.

What I am trying to do with this tank is to paint a picture with the fish as it were. Like the 4 cichlid that I put in to match the festivum. I do not know what they are cause they were mislabled at the store. The latin name they had on the label is actually the name for shovel nose catfish, so I have no idea what they are. If they stay small like the festivum they can stay but if they grow big I have a tank for them. They just really caught my eye with a wonderful color spectrum on them, they looked like they would have some potential just wish I knew what they were. I have tried to find them but have had no luck getting an id by myself. The main thing I am wondering is if they are predatory as the fish I have on order will make very expensive snacks.

With the first catfiish thanks for the id. I got 2 of them for the price of 1 at the store because they put them in with some salvini and the salvini were trying to slaughter them, so the fish guy gave me a 2 for 1, saddly it is not a fish they usually carry they showed up as oddball on the order.

Will try to update the thread when I put the next batch in. Very pumped because the fish I was able to select are not normally available here.

Now that I am blinded by the light I can tell you what they are.

I feel like a mogwai (bright light ) http://www.google.ca/search?q=mogwa...oI8T20gGC2ZjkBA&ved=0CDgQsAQ&biw=1400&bih=911

It is a corallife with these bulbs. coralife f21t5-bp and coralife 6700k f21 t5 bp. This little light fixture did very well for me with corals so I thought it would work well with plants. Though like I said I have no exp really with plants in aquaria. I will though be getting some seachem plant stuff and am wondering if there are any aquatic fert spikes that I can put in the substrate llike can be used in house plants.

For the area I live in 2 full sw set ups with rock, substrate and fish and a fw set up and a quarentine tank that is a smoking deal. I go tonight to take my first in person look at it will take a couple of pics. The thing here is one of the fish he has is very hard to get ahold of ss puffer.

Update time on the tank.

Well, the festivum and the other 4 (that I do not know what they are) were taken out tonight and put in the 150g that I brought the festivum from in the first place. I will do some rearranging of my tank populations tomorrow night.

The reason I went with the bloodfin tetras for the first fish were that they were cheap and were going to be the test pilots of the tank. To see if the festivum would be compatible with little fish. The festivum were okay with little fish, yet, they definitely have the ability to eat plants at a fast rate.

The 4 other fish however seemed ok for a day or two, yet, after this weekend the porthole cat and 4 bloodfin are nowhere to be found. I watched the tank all day today just to see if they were going after the bloodfins and sure enough they were. Also they eat plants faster than the festivum. So out they go.

I don't have my camera here otherwise I would have taken some pics of who went into the tank tonight. I held back on my special little fish because I was not sure that I was going to do tank work tonight. I had one brevis here in a 140g and found 2 brevis at the lfs, I also picked up 3 dwarf neon rainbow, and 5 male odessa barbs.

Now that I have taken the meanies out of the tank, the next fish that I will be putting in will be false rumminose tetra.

Well for any of you who are familiar with Mr. Bill

The tank had a Mr Sluggo moment last week.

Some people moved into the neighbourhood and it just was not the same.

A song came to mind when the big boys moved into the neighbourhood.

I honestly did not intend to do this but had a MFKer moment because I sold off a 180g and a 225g tank and had to turn their 150g home into a habitat for 3 pairs-Jag/Loiselle and Veja Syn. So there was a moment where the little fish said hello and then in the famous words of Mr. Bill -
OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

This thread is amusing with all the changes LOL
