With the water starting to get cool I have a feeling I wont be able to go collecting the rest of the year. Luckily my last trip to the Destin Jetties Friday was a good one. I ended with three doctorfish the size of a quarter, really cool, my first tang/surgeon fish species! Also brought home an urchin.

I saw many other nice fish but didnt try to catch anything else other then the tangs. Saw at least three different wrasse species including a blue head, two damsel species (beaugregory and cocoa), mangrove snapper, juvi lane snapper, juvi red snapper, mullet, tons of different kinds of baitfish, some BIG stone crabs (was pissed I didnt bring a cooler), and more.

Any cool SW natives any one else has collected?

Anyhow, I cant get a pic of the fish I caught but here is exactly what they look like.

^ I'm sure you need a permit for areas like Key West, however I dont know about other areas. As i've researched rules of harvesting marine creatures for the aquarium trade just for fun and sheer curiosity. I've never attempted it.

i was under the impression it was illegal to collect in florida without a permit?

I dont worry about collecting laws in Canada, you shouldnt worry about collecting laws in Florida.

There is nothing illegal about what I did. When it warms back up I was told of a spot I could snorkel and collect some gorgonians.

There really was no reason to be rude, rather you could just state that it is in fact legal to collect fish. I know Corals and rock do require permits in Florida, but restrictions on live fish are minimal as I understand it. There are some protected species, on the flip side the state will do everything short of pay you to take lion fish.

That is not entirely true. You CAN COLLECT CORALS in Florida with nothing more than a fishing license. You can only collect soft/octocorals however. So, mushrooms, zoos, gorgonians, ricordia, etc are fair game. You can not collect rock, however a small amount of base rock can be on the coral.

You are allowed up to 20 marine "ornamental" species per day but no more than five of one species. This includes everything from fish that are not sport fish nor bait fish, crabs, starfish, sea urchins, slugs, cucumbers, and soft corals.

That's cool, I was more just curious about it, not trying to attack you. I just thought I heard somewhere that you couldn't, but it must have been a refference to stonies. I wonder if I can get a fishing permit like a "week pass" that would allow this... would make a trip to florida much more worth wile... LOL. Though I'd need to get some higher quality transportation equiptment to bring them home...

Yes, you can buy a non resident 7-day fishing license. I think its $30. Getting them back across the border may be an issue, not sure how one would go about that. If you can go across the border to a pet shop and bring animals back then I would assume youd be good to go. To get the good stuff like ricordia, zoos and shrooms youre going to need to go to extreme south Florida. Up here on the panhandle the snorkeler is limited to pretty much fish, inverts and the occasional gorgonian and they are only found in a few secret spots.

If you can scuba we have giant Caribbean zoanthids up here. They are really cool and the polyps can be almost 2" across!
