Something I dont understand....Wearing uniforms in public

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was always told by my Marine buddy that wearing your utilities in public was frowned upon and trashy. He always said, "If you are going to represent the military wear your dress blues... end of story. No self respecting serviceman would wear his utilities in public."

Good question. I've often wondered this myself after hearing the above statement.

The Marine Corps is the only Branch that views the battle dress uniform that way. I think its an actual Marine Corps reg that prohibits them off base except for certain circumstances. The other Branches are not so rigid when it comes to the battle dress uniform.

if guys in uniform are at a bar, and keep to themselves, not bother anybody, just having a good time among themselves, do you guys still feel the same way?

just wondering

at first when i saw that you posted john, i thought you were gonna flame me.

i refuse to debate with you because i don't wanna end up as an unpolishable turd in your sig
You won't get that chance! You're a wise "man" (I would use another word that is close to turd, but I'll be on vacation! lol)

the difference is the guy in the uniform is getting in free, the guido is just a normal person like you and i

btw you don't need the uniform to get in free... any time i showed my military ID, i usually got in free... I never asked for it, and I never wore my uniform tho... Just a perk of being willing to give my life so you can go on being a guido...

Wow, was I shocked to see this as a topic. And I noticed no one really defended the military perspective, so I will go against the grain and say.
Being a Navy Senior Chief and former Recruiter in New Orleans, I am insulted that you guys have the nerve to question any member of the Military and how they wear thier uniform, unless you have walked in their shoes. Secondly like one member mentioned, if you are that appauled by the member and the reason's they wear their uniform and you really want to know, why don't you just ask them, I am sure they will love to school you on why.
Every branch of service has rules to wearing and when you can wear the uniform, including the BDU's, Service Dress and Full Dress uniforms. If you see a service member in a grocery store, gas station, bar or where ever they are probably in regulation, (wheather most of you think it is tacky or not), especially those near a militray bases, becasue they would probably get reported if caught by a superior. Now that's not to say I have not had to pull military members aside for either wearing a uniform in correctly (usually being uncovered) or the worng uniform for the area, but for non member to sit on hear and bash our service men and woman for what they take pride is riduclous when some of you on here could not hold a candle to the job they do for this country. As for women loving a man in uniform, there are other things that play into that and that's not all inclusive to the uniform, but what the man in the uniform suppose to represent. Having traveled all over the world, weather you like it or not, yes there are women that love a man in unoform, get over it. Also some companies promote wearing of the uniform for discounts in games, food, even bars. etc. So again the next time you see a person in uniform somewhere you think he should not be, instead of turning up your lip to them, you should be thanking them for your peace of mind..

lol, i'm sure you're gonna get some responses for this post

if you didn't notice, i already went against the grain. and although i agree with you, i don't think you should be insulted and i don't think anyone was exactly bashing either. i dont' think anyone here isn't appreciative of the people who is serving.

i think some just didn't like that fact that they (those individuals that they have personally come across)flaunt it in a bad way.

but i think regardless, everyone has the right to their opinion, it's those free opinions that you fight with your lives for.

but i'm confused, so is it against regulation or not to be in uniform off duty?

Not concern about the replies, as there has already been 6 or 7 pages of out of line post.
It's not against regualtion to be in uniform off duty. There are several different uniform to wear for whatever occasion.
And what is flauniting it in a bad way? They have the right to wear it despite how some other may feel it looks in public. Even if it's to pick up ladies. If that works for them so be it. No difference than the guy sitting in from the club in his car. lol
One things for sure if worn properly, they have earned the right..

flaunting it in a bad way as in, they walk in a place and are arrogant and condescending and kind of with a chip on their shoulder.

i'm not saying i seen it myself, but i'm paraphrasing what others have said.

but i agree with you, they should wear what they want and even if they are being douchebags, i don't see why the clothing themselves would matter. if the guys a punk looking for trouble or using other material things to pick up chics, it's that individual that's the issue, not what he's wearing
