We have kids that walk around on campus in their stuff all the time, but they are ROTC, and I think its required. That being said, I think that is a stupid rule.
There is one angle to look at more in depth that answers this aside from guys actually in the military service:
Regular people in camo.
You don't have to be military to buy it or wear it. Could very well be civilians in camo walking around. Many civilians can't tell the difference between military look gear and military issue gear.
i don't think anyone cares about people in camo, most of the time they just look like fools when head to toe in camo. most people can tell the difference between a military uniform and a knock off though
When you said "we," did you mean all firefighters in your station, in your city, in your county, in your state? How can you be so certain and speak for "we?" I understand that there's policy and regulation. However, each individual still has his/her own mind, and his/her own interpretation.... There was a time, right after 9/11, there were many firefighters stood on street with a boot to collect donation. That was clearly violation of their regulation, yet they still did.We change out of our station wear before we leave the station. If you see firefighters in uniform out in public they are either doing public safety education or doing inspections. When we go to the grocery store we take out the engine and the crew to shop for our breakfast, lunch or dinner. We are still always on alert for calls.
Me personally I wouldnt wear my station wear off duty because people will feel I am obligated to help(although I am willing to help) and if I dont, I would give my department a bad rep.

But that (the way of collecting donation, especially cash donation without proper record, and just a boot) is against their policy/regulation... Yet, they did it, and like you said, STILL do it...that's considered working. hahaha, they're collecting donations for a charity. if they didn' wear their uniforms, we wouldnt know they were fire fighters
ps, they STILL do that today
