DEAD GATF, Shovelnose, Buttikoferi, Betta, BLIND AROWANA!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ouch sorry for your loss... but i agree, something un-usual has to be off, if the GATF has no guts left in its stomach? unless another fish ate it, which doesn't seem to be the case?

I agree it might be the market shrimp causing problem? although no idea how though...

Are you an mechanic? Could it be that you have or had some contact with chemicals at work that may have transfered over into your aquariums? I am a mechanic and I am pretty cautious with my hands because I work with many different chemicals that could potentially get absorbed into my skin and transferred into my tanks.... I try to use my rubber gloves to prevent this but I get busy and tend to work without them alot. I dont know about you all but i always have my hands in my aquariums so I hope some day I dont have any issues like this. I am sorry for all your troubles man it really sucks

You noticed his grubby hands too, LOL. I was thinking the same thing one I first saw his hand.

OP your Arowana did it have Hole-n-head? I see in one of the pictures a hole on the right side of its face and on top of its head.
That generally caused by poor water conditions

I am a mechanic and my hands get grubby like that too, but I try very hard not to put them in my tanks until they are CLEAN! Finger nail bristle brush and good old elbow grease:headbang2

I noticed it too, these don't happened overnight. It also have lateral disease too..plenty of holes on lateral lines. Also what is up with the arowana's deformed jaw structure? I am start to suspicious about OP.

Thank you for the support, much appreciated. I am quite fond of your setups, nice work.

We did have some discolored water out of the tap about a month ago and it freaked me out, so I drained my hotwater heater and flushed the lines and tested the regularly tesed params just for piece of mind and all turned up good. Butthen again I don't have tests for every fish killing factor out there I.E: higher levels of chloramine that prime couldn't handle, arsenic(which has been found in our area in the past), heavy metals again that are too high of a concentration for prime to handle etc.

I am stumped and down over all of this. Already sold one tank, gonna downsize for now till I get time to setup a RO/DI system large enuff to handle 2000+ gallons per week...

Arsenic? That water is not safe for humans, let alone fish...

Wow lot of replies! I am a machinist, but my hands are RARELY ever in the tanks and I wash them thoughrougly and rinse them even better.

The water conditions are good, no levels of damaging substances are found when testing. The arowana does seem to have issues with lateral line and hith, although fish more susceptible to those issues are fine which leads me to believe it was something in particular with that fish that caused it.

I have been in the hobby for about 13 years so I'm not green to all of this. This one instance has just got me stumped. All my other fish in each tank seem completely unaffected.

Oh btw as far as food, each tank had a different food staple so it was not a common denominator in this instance.

My thoughts exactly must be contaminated tap water

arsenic can be natural in water in some places but its in really small amounts. Is it a rural well source?? where does your water come from. Obviously there is a problem with the parameters of your water because there is signs of disease caused by bad water, like lateral line disease. Your Arrowana being blind, most likely from cloudy eye are all from bad water, Poisoning would have just killed them outright, not give them diseases like that.
