Connecting 2 tanks to make one larger tank???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So origionally this was going to be a 110 gallon project...then it was brought to my attention that i could simply buy a new bottom glass and use the front and back panels of both tanks and essentially end up with a 48"x48" square tank which would be absolutely awesome til i did some math.
I stated that i wasnt worried about weight based on the fact that the guy 2 doors down from me has a 120 i think it was...that was when the build would have ended up 110 gal which would have been around 913lbs.
Then i did the math on the 48x48 tank idea and it comes out to approx. 240 gallons...which converted to Lbs comes out to almost 1990lbs, well 1986lbs to be more accurate...that much weight i WOULD be worried about. so that is on hold for the time being.
But I am brainstorming and trying to come up with something else resembling the 110 idea that i can do with materials i have that wouldnt require the mid side seams.
Anyway just thought i'd share.

are you upstairs or downstairs apartment? i would make the bottom of the stand out of plywood, to help di,sribute the weight over the floor more evenly, though a ton of water is a lot of weight for an upstairs apartment if thats where you live

A plywood tank would suffice and look much nicer. staining the wood would be a nice touch. But i dig the ghetto tank on cinderblocks. Feel like plywood is a safer idea.

Your calculation is wrong. A 48" X 48" X 21" tank would be a 210 gallon tank.
Oops, i used 24" as the height by miztake, you are absolutely right. That would make it about 1743Lbs....lighter but still way too heavy.

@Rugg I am on the 2nd floor.
@bushido I have thought about the plywood route, but my idea was to do this with mostly materials i already have which i dont have the materials to do a plywood. And once the 48x48 was proposed, i was really diggin the glass tank so that i could see in the sides as well and have more unrestricted view. Also the

I think an L shaped tank would be cool, but it wouldnt really accomplish what im trying to do, which is more depth front to back. Although i have always thought one would be pretty awesome.

Why not just buy some glass panels and build a tank?. Since you are talking about dismantling a tank, might as well go that route. Then you could get thicker glass you need and make it exactly the size you'd want.

make a L shaped tank.

That was my first thought when reading the thread title.

I would be too paranoid to join 2 tanks together on anything other than a concrete basement floor. Could you get a new bottom piece to fit the dimensions as well as new thicker side pieces?
