Monsanto's engineered crops have been known to cause various organ damage (liver and kidneys) also in rats in mice which they must be testing on. Pesticides in crops that have caused mutated insects, and "superweeds" resistant to herbicides. Involved in creating aspartame which has been linked to brain tumors and other health conditions. But you are worried about how people keep their polys in a tank without decorations????? REALLY???? How about you worry about some real problems and not whether someone has substrate or plants in their bichir tank.

You are far from the only fish biologist on this forum. I can think of several off the top of my head, including myself. If there's one thing I've learned from additional work experience in the aquarium trade, it's that many biologists think they have a better understanding of how to keep fishes due to their educational background. However, fish keeping knowledge is primarily experienced-based, and it seems like you have little in comparison to many of the people here. I'm not saying everyone does it right the first time, but accumulating experience can take some trial and error.
My polypterid background? I have 6 bichirs. 3 dels, a sen, a retro, and a crooked ornatipinnis. He was a free one I adopted. I will eventually try to breed the dels once they get another inch on them. I have also cared for tanks with endlicheris, laps and ropefish.
I think you seriously need to evaluate whether the fish you're diagnosing from a picture is actually stressed by its environment. Many of the videos I see with multiple bichirs feature them doing the exact same thing they do in a planted tank. And there is one benefit for the fishes that live in captivity: a lack of predation. They usually teach you that in Aquarium Science. You haven't noticed that animals will become more bold over time once they realize there are no predators?
And not every wild introduction is a success. Take the captive breeding of redfish in Florida for example. The survival rate of the farmed individuals in the wild is less than 5% in some instances. The world is not perfect but you're dealing with one of the toughest fishes on the market. I have been to many wholesalers and I can safely say that polypterids have a much higher survival rate than most of the other available fishes. Your time would be better-spent working with something like datnoids or roseline sharks.

Great, I'll look for that follow up when you have free time. Even better, if you can get pics of your workspace (the lab) specifically of the bichir tanks, that would be great.
By the way, what happens to the baby polypterides that Monsanto produces?
You said you have one, so I assume other employees have access to them too?

I hadn't engaged you in any kind of debate, all I have done was ask for more information, because I was interested in the work you're doing.
If we were to engage in debate, it would be important for me to understand where you are coming from, your background on the subject, etc... but like I said, we were not debating anything.
I´m not stupid buddy. You have your opinion about Monsanto and you follow your agenda. I wouldn´t be able to change your mind in that subject and think its senseless to debate about that then.
I've never heard about Monsanto until this thread. I understand why you're getting defensive, but the reaction you're getting from the members of our community is a direct consequence of your attitude.
Now, if you can look past that and answer my sincere questions, I'm still willing to give you the benefit of the doubt.
My tank has 66 gallons. I change evry week 30% of the water and i use rain water. I feed him insects (crickets), worms, pellets and he also like snails. His only tankmate is an ancistrus and two large faunus snails.
