@tokyogasmask: could you please tell me, where those pictures were taken? They are great. I guess its near a volcano, since the stones look like lava bombs.

I have expected that polypterids in Lake Turkana would tolerate more alkaline waters, since Lake Turkana is very brakish.

I can't be more accurate on those photos, as they are just pics found on the web, but I am pretty sure it is Lake Tanganyika.

* On a side note, though I do think Darius has come here with the wrong attitude, I don't think calls for him to be banned is fair.
He does have some valid points, and is entitled to his opinion just like everyone else.

* Darius, word to the wise, there are many here who have vast knowledge of the fish they keep, and there are people here active in study groups too.
Don't judge a whole forum of people upon the actions of a few.

It is amazing to see how much that congicus is adapted to his environment. His color is almost identical to the stones and background.

And about your other comment. I was not very nice, i know. But the amount of topics about dead fish here shocked me. That "lungfish massacre" topic was the best example for that. And i would wish others here would react properly to that.

Darius, what is the purpose of your company's research into polypterides? Does your company breed fish for the ornamental fish hobby? If you work for a 'bioengineering' company, and you breed fish, I can only imagine you are breeding for the intent to distribute? To reduce pressure on wild populations by producing captive bred fish?

@ Cohazard: No, we do not breed them for the intent to distribute them. Polypterids are one of the most basal Actinopterygii and the only recent Cladistia. They are a genetic treasure and hold many genes that you can´t find in other Actinopterygii.. I can´t go much into detail but you can imagine how much worth that can have in agriculture, pharma and medical solutions.

of course that will also help to breed them for distribution later. We have very good results with P. ornatipinnis and P. endlicheri. I don´t know how much private fish keepers are into research but if some studys are published that will have a huge impacts in specific breeding programs.

^^^I understand and agree with you that some fishkeepers on this forum shouldn't be fishkeepers. However, bashing the community as a whole isn't helping your cause whatsoever. Also, I'm confused about one thing... your profile says you work for Monsanto. Is that the same Monsanto that produces herbicides, genetically altered food, and bovine growth horomones, and has had many lawsuits against it for endangering the health of the environment??

Okay so your company is looking to harvest genes that control certain functions in an organism. Your company is for profit, correct?

What method does your company use to collect the genetic data?

I eluded to that earlier and got no response, probably due to my manner of speaking to him....i am interested to hear the answer lol.
To answer honestly, yes that was monsanto that you are thinking of.

I like the fact that darius is interested in the genetic research of ancient forms, however im still stuck on the fact that he was ranting about being in favor of banning several of the fish people on here keep lol.

Yes i work for Monsanto and i don´t want comment any lawsuits. That is not my business.

Okay by reading the other comments in the thread, I see you claim to work for Monsanto, a biotech company that primarily focuses on engineering traits for crops such as drought resistance, etc... they are definitely a for profit company.

So the questions is, what characteristic, what gene in polypterids are they looking into for use in engineering crops? Perhaps your company is not applying it to crops, and instead is working on some other venture under a different name.

What method are you using to collect genetic material?

If you are breeding, what happens to the offspring of the polypterides?

Rather hypocritical then, aren't we, lecturing others on their "impact" on the environment while working for a company that actively destroys it?? I apologize, I need to stop bashing now.
