Funny how agressive some react here. It is not "to each his own". It is the best for the creature. Some here seem to collect bichirs like stamps and forget, that those things are living beings. Bichirs should not be kept in large groups. Thats unnatural und gives them stress. That they grow and eat means nothing, sturgeons do the same in those terrible breeder farms. As for the "no dark areas", my tank has alot of Echinodorus that create shadow in parts of the tank that are not visible on the pictures. My tank looks dirty? And? So does the Congo. Bichirs do not live in clinical environments. I use rainwater to fill the tank.
And serious, if you can´t use planted tanks for a 50+ bichir, then don´t keep that species. He demands that for his living comfort. You can´t offer it? Then buy a senegalus. It would be interesting to see how much bichirs get imported into the US evry year and how much of that survive the 1st year in captivity. I think its less than 20%.
