why do people think oscars are wimps

Funny story: I was once in a pet shop and the owner had a 11-12" oscar in a 125. One day he was emptying out a tank and had to move a 6-7" butterkofferi. I told him not to put the butterkofferi in with the oscar because the butterkofferi would kick his ***. He didn't listen. 10 minutes after adding the fish, the oscar got a whoopin. Oscars are wimps.

some oscars are more aggressive than others i think mine is pretty aggressive for an oscar but there are a lot of cichlids out there that can kick oscar butt

There are different classes of aggression among cichlids. An INDIVIDUAL Cichlid that is defaulted (based on type of cichlid) to a particular category of aggression can sometimes not match people's expectations of them for example an oscar that ends up being an axe murderer, a midas that is a wimp, a dovii that gets beat up by everything.. etc.

To OP, Your oscar may very well be a tough fish but I'd be hard pressed to find any 6" fish , no matter how tough, that can hold their own against anything that is 14". Someone will probably pop up with their own story about a 4" buttikoferi That decap'd a 20" dovii. Those are special circumstances.. and not the norm.

Individual fish+ environment=individual personality :D

great answer but what i meant about the 6 inch fish is that some people say that Oscars can get along with servem and convict witch get around 6 inches well sometimes servems get 7-8 inches but that is wat i ment

Oscars by far are the wimps of the large SA/CA cichlid world. Never had one last in any aggressive community. They are bullies and will use their size if tankmates are smaller.

As a general rule they can... Then there are other factors. Tank size is huge in determining what can and can't get along as well as number of occupants. A full grown severum and oscar in a 40 or 60 gallon is probably bad news.. sev and an oscar in a 180-240 that's easy as pie. Also if there are only two fish in the tank the weaker fish will get beat unmercifully whereas having many fish would help in distributing the aggression.

Then again, you may just have a killer Oscar on your hands.

It depends, some people have had Oscars that are mean SOBs and you have ones that just want to have fun.My Oscar has its moments of being a nutcase at times and had no issues beating up my Jaguar that I use to own.Now people are correct that Oscars will bully smaller cichlids, but the Jaguar and Oscar were the same size when they were fighting for who should be king of the tank.
