I agree that this guy seems like an ignorant fool, mainly because he came in guns blazing with a low post count, and an unknown name which will annoy any forum follower. However he has a few points, I have seen a few tanks, bare bottom, with polypterids as the substrate. Now, Im sure these polys are receiving what a vet would call "adequate care" which basically means, giving the basics for survival. I feel that this is to the far left side of the spectrum, and this guy, who wants every tank to be a jungle, the far right of the spectrum. Now, I think any one with a brain could see that neither is the ideal situation for any fish. I think it is up to the fish keepers that observe their personal individuals to decide what that particular poly requires. Also you throw in the need for floor space for the larger species, and the risk of injury against the decorations, it is hard to find the "best poly tank." I will admit that I dislike bare bottom crammed tanks as much as the next guy, but you don't need to come in to a community type forum blaming every one for animal abuse if their tank is not up to your personal standards.

Cohazard and tokyogasmask wrote intelligent articulate posts with many wonderful points and you decide to respond to a member who saids your ornate is ugly? wow! really?

Nothing wrong with your Ornatipinnis from where I sit. Looks nice.
Though needs a bigger home, but I guess you knew that.

i plan to upgrade the tank, when he reached a certain length. I already upgraded his set up. The problem is, that he is a very shy guy. You only see him, when you feed him. I like to watch him. He shows very interesting hunting behavior. When i put crickets in his tank, one of the insects crawled on the filter, he slipped half out of the water to get it.

Can you please answer cohazards questions please to clear them up,as they are valid to this thread and your concerns and ours.
And about your other comment. I was not very nice, i know. But the amount of topics about dead fish here shocked me. That "lungfish massacre" topic was the best example for that. And i would wish others here would react properly to that.
how many bad threads about dead fish have you found and have you checked the dates on them? There may be a bit of a high number but keep in mind that there more then 3 thousand members on this forum. The number of threads may seem big but when you look at the dates of getting posted you will notice that even if you include every single dead fish thread ever made on this forum and compare them to the total posts over the course of one week they will make up around 5-10%. this is 10 years of threads compared to one week of posts. if you add all of the other posts from the start of MFK then you will notice that those threads pretty much make up about 0.05% of the total posts on MFK. Even then most of the deaths are due to underestimating the fish strength or tankmates. I lost a bichir to a rocket gar that was about 1 or 2 inches shorter and almost the same thickness. Can you honestly tell me that you could see a 7 inch fish kept very well fed and never goes near the bottom eating a 8 inch bichir that is almost the same diameter after coexisting for almost 5 months with no issue? half of these are simple underestimations and you will note that the unfortunate keepers learn their lesson and if they repeat that species then they will make modifications to ensure it won't happen again. I agree that the bare tanks are ugly but if the owner is willing to pay that much for the fish and care for it properly i see no issue. I can see the substrate issue since many bottom fish die when they eat gravel and it can kill them without any applicable solution to the problem. I see that plants are good for the fish but unlike nature when our plants, which are often expensive, are uprooted there is not much you can do to keep the plants alive or grow more to replace them once they are uprooted. I agree not everyone deserves to keep these fish but very few of those are on this forum. your not forced to look at tanks that look bad and the fish are healthy and living a good life so i see no reason to force people to take on your views. if I may make a real world comparison to you accusations you are accusing every single german person of being a nazi because of the actions done by a few bad individuals in world war 2. this may seem a little extreme but you are equitting every polypterus owner of being these horrible people even though very few actually do it in that manner.

note I respect all fallen in WW2 including my great grandparents. Also note that I have several german friends and believe the Germany to be a great Country populated bay a terrific group of people.

After much clean up, I do see some value in this thread, however, it's up to the members to keep it open on how mature everyone acts here. The Poly Peeps are pretty mellow, friendly, knowledgeable, and most importantly...HELPFUL.

You come off by insulting the forum as a whole and you expected that people were going to take your advice with open arms? :screwy:

Everyone has their idea of how to keep Polys the best way they can. You have an issue with that, as you think that your way is the best and only way. That won't cut it. I can tell you that I don't keep plants with my Polys due to the plants always being uprooted and the fact that my Polys hate my lights when I turn them on. So no plants and no added lights. And I'm not going to change my ideas/decor around until I see fit. Does that make me a bad fish keeper? Maybe to some, but do I care? Not particularly. After all...my fish, my tank, my way, but "my way" always changes as I learn.

You say that you don't want to talk about your work with these creatures while most people here have no problem talking about how they discovered this or using them for that. I can only imagine what your company is really doing with these fish. Monsanto is definitely not known for keeping their animals in proper conditions or having them live out the rest of their lives comfortably.

3 things to know...

1. If you want to share your knowledge with people, by all means, we're all ears..err...eyes.

2. If you think you're too good for people here, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

3. You want to bash and talk trash, then you won't last very long here.
