Best cichlid for a 150?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
forget about grammados or dovi they will get way to large, go fir a jag flowerhorn or teas chichlid, they are your best bets and are great fish !

It's an 18" wide tank? I would put anything that gets too far over 12" in for life personally.

Yes the tank is 18" I'm looking for some medium sized cichlids that might do well in a small group. To be honest none of the fish mentioned so far appeal to me. Right now I have EBJDs and BGJDs but I'm thinking ahead to when I my one breeding pair of JDs and the 150 is open. Thank you for all the responses so far!

LOL I meant WOULDN'T put anything that gets too far over 12". Conveniently enough, most of the CAs that might outgrow the tank are listed on this thread! :D

Really don't know what you're in to, but I would consider A. lyonsi, istlanum, P. friedrichstalli, N. tetracanthus, H. bartoni... Really the list goes on and on. I don't usually post in stocking threads, too hard to make good recommendations as everyone likes something different...

Explain to me how a grammodes will be too large for a 150. Grammodes reach 8-12 inches and it will take years for it to reach the 10 inch mark. The dovii part is true unless its a female and the same goes for a jag as they stay much smaller than the males. FH are cheap versions of trimacs, and whatever a teas chichlid is (probly meant texas cichlid) they would be a waste IMO as a wet pet.. To the OP you really havent told us what you want and u basicly pushed aside what everyone suggested to you. Jack dempseys are cool but dont require a 150 for themselves you will be fine with a 75 for them. You have some good replies as to what will work. I myself am guilty of posted a thread asking for suggestions and just not considering them which becomes a waste of time for people.

Well thank you for replying to my stocking thread :) I'm going to look into the fish you listed above. I guess I don't really know what I want hence the reason for this thread. I like a brightly colored fish and don't like outrageous nuchal humps, but other than that I'm not terribly picky on looks.

I know JDs don't need a 150 but I have a large group I'm trying to get one pair with. They will live in the 150 until I get a pair. Then the pair will go into a 75 and the rest will be sold. Then I'll look into something else for the 150. I had considered every fish in this thread at the time I posted before. I was trying to find something that is a little less common.

Online vendors have made it possible to get most fish. Some of the uncommon fish would include

lyonsi(endangered in the wild)
la ceiba freddys (endangered in the wild)
istlanum (not sure if they are becoming endangered but i know there are becoming harder to get)
grammodes(very rare to see adults)
trimacs(not uncommon but they are just awesome)
veja species (becoming very popular and are real beastly fish) (i love redhead cichlids)
Festaes (Not so uncommon anymore but the most wanted fish among hobbyist)
Loiselli cichlid (parachromis species rule and anyone will tell you they are the top species to keep)
I'M SURE OTHERS CAN ADD TO THIS LIST TO HELP YOU OUT.

It been said a few times no peacock bass Dovii or umbees unless they are female i would do a cuban cichild or a grammode
