You could also find a place with large arowanas, and show him how big they actually get. A lot of new fish keepers do not understand how large a foot is, until you show them a 12" fish. Often times I will tell customers how big the fish they want will get, and they think it's fine and then they see one that is half the adult size and they say, "this is how big they get?!" and end up not getting it.

I didexplain how big they get. And he already knows they get huge. But some guy in a shop on nyc told him they will stay small in his small tank :(

I hate that myth, started by morons and believed by them.

so heres the update. . . he did not get them on Wednesday because there were 80 bucks and he did not what them to die b/c the tank is not cycled yet. (tho i still dont think he knows what that means.) i still have to go and try the thing about bad and good luck.

So is he still trying to put these aros in a 55 gallon?

They can live permanently, but after 12" they might deform inside the 55 gallons. My friend has grown 2 silver arowana in a 29 gallon 'til 12-16" and then donated to the pet store.
They might be stunt, deformed, but won't die for sure if filtered well.

whether or not they will live isn't really the largest concern here as much as it seems the amount of cruelty involved in putting 4 aro's in a 55 gallon. I've wanted aro's since i started thinking about fish keeping and after my research I've refused to even consider purchasing one until i get my 300 gallon, and that's just for 1. It's a shame that those gorgeous fish are going to be subject to that tank. *fingers crossed* to more issues continuing to arise to prevent him from getting them.

Fail to see how a 30" fish in a 48" tank could look fine :screwy:

Fish did not grow to 30 inches...........Fish flat out around 2 feet, stunt growth...........Sure it stopped short of its full length, but the fish's shape looked fine...........

I would just inform he that if he goes ahead with this animal cruelty, that you'll be finding a new place to buy your Chinese food from. All you can do is educate yourself first and then try to pass on the info to him.

But you have a aro in a goldfish bowl :grinno:

So little update he bought 4 and they all died. He never cleaned the tank our changed the water. Whent in once to check on them water level was 5 inches from top. So sad
