I'm in the process of joining the Air Force, and I have no worries about moving my turtles and fish across the country. However I'd love to be a Cryptologic Linguist and go to Japan. My only worry tho Is my fish and turtles I don't want to give them up just to go to Japan. I don't have a ton of fish I'd label as must keep. Just my 2 Oscars, my 5 Silver Dollars, and my 4 Red Eared Sliders I wouldn't get rid of for the world.

I don't even know if it's legal to take Red Eared Sliders to Japan.

Does anyone have any input on this? Has anyone done this before?

honestly it would be a huge hassle, i thing it better just giving them a good home and starting new in japan

I'm confused about what a cryptologic linguist does... crpytology (study of things that may or may not exist) linguest, (studies languages)

so youre going to japan to study languages that may or may not exist? correct me if im wrong but that doesn't seem like a real proffession. considering most scientists frown on Cryptozoology because the practitioners aren't scientists and don't follow scientific methodology. same with cryptobotony.

As far as I understand I'll learn the language here in Technical Training then go overseas.

I'd rather stay in the USA then get rid of em, I don't care how much of a hassle it is I won't get rid of em.

So the profession apparently has nothing to do with cryptological linguistics? it sounds like they just used an interesting name for a boring job. but I wish you good luck anyway! I personally don't see any reason why someone would want to join the US military of any in the world. but when I wanted to bring some of my pets to Canada with me from Europe you have to pay a fee and the animals will be held in quarantine for 3 weeks or something until you can collect them.
So the japanese system will be somewhat similar to this. the only issue with fish and turtles is that they might die during the shipping or quarantine. Personally I heard Japan has a really lively fish trade so I don't think it would be hard for you to replace your fish but I understand if you have an emotional attachment to them

I could deal with leaving behind the silver dollars probably, but my 2 Oscars I love, and my Turtles I absolutely adore.

The job itself may not be too terribly interesting, but getting paid to learn a new language and go visit a country I've always wanted to go too are the biggest benefit. As for joining the Military It wasn't my first option but to put it as my recruiter said, I'm stuck between a Rock and a Rock. I'm living in my grandparents basement Without the option of going to college, I simply don't have the time to do so. I have to be out ASAP and that means Military since in this economy I can't afford to live on my own with even a full time job paying around minimum wage or a little over.

Hey brother. Here is what I did. Train and pay someone you trust to take care of your animals while you are gone. Its liberating for you and you still get to come back to your fish.

it sounds like you have a good system worked out for your current situation. I didnt bring any pets to canada cause it cost A LOT. so be prepared it could cost you a lot of money.

and don't listen to the recruiter, The american military have killed thousands over the last 11 years in Iraq and Afghanistan for no apparent reason, they need more support so of course they want to entice you. there are many courses available online, where you can go to China or japan and teach english. whilst youre there you get free accomodation aswell as a pay check. I've heard that in China they actually give you the option to stay and be a full time teacher if you like it enough.

the worlds a very open place these days if you want to travel, you could do it by helping others less fortunate instead of maintaining a military presence on a country that is still suffering effects from the H bomb the same military dropped.

and may I add that being a military expat in Japan is not going to win you many friends either, they are a very tighly knit culture, 3rd generation koreans that are born in japan and so were their parents are still considered foreigners in Japan, even though they have adopted all japanese language and culture. just keep that in mind.

I have almost no friends any more. My best friend be came a huge ass, and his brother and his brothers friend who I used to hang out with I wouldn't trust to watch a rock for me. They were my only friends and made any new friends since. I wouldn't trust any of my family to do it nor would any of them be willing to do it.

That basically leaves me with three options, Get rid of them, Bring them with, Or don't go.
I'm willing not to go and not to get a 10k signing bonus just to keep them.

Like I said, Zari they are just trying to rope you in, its what all the recruiters do. 10k to them is nothing they have millions. think of how advanced your healthcare system could be if the country wasn't wasting all that money on its military?

You seem like a really nice guy and I think you should think things through and look at all the pros and cons before doing something. I just moved to canada a few months ago, my passport is on its way to me right now, for the last 4 months ive been unable to work, drive or do anything. I don't know anyone and all my friends and family are half a world away. I had friends that turned into *******s too and after a while you don't even know what you liked about them anyway. trust me.
