Aimara with rays?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
if you read the entire thread which you obviously have not.. i warned about keeping an Aimara with rays.. i actually recommended that the Aimara be kept by itself instead of risking it! I see that it working for him but i would not put my Aimara with a ray, let alone newly born pups.

So we have established that these fish possess various dispositions within reason and can cohabit with other fish. For me this fish is best kept either on its own or with carefully selected tank mates, Polypterus spring to mind being mainly bottom dwellers plus these ideally need to be bigger than the Wolf.I have to say I have learned something from this thread as to what you guys have posted regarding your own experiences with this species,I am amazed just how well behaved the Wolf can be under captive conditions.
Being an odd ball fan though I have to say if I ever get one of these fish again it would be kept solitary once over 10-12",a fish armed with teeth like this and coupledwith an unpredictable temperament just isn't worth the risk, certainly not with my rays.
Interesting thread,
All the best!

I really don't think the rays are seen as any kind of threat. They really seem to go ignored. I would tend to think that to the wolf another fish would be viewed as more of a threat then a bottomdwelling scavenger. I've seen the way my Wolf eyeballs the Brycon. It sure seems like the wolf pays much more attention to fish pacing the middle of the tank then rays on the bottom. The rays pounce on and top the wolf and it doesn't seem to mind much.

I understand that all this could change when they get larger. Let's stop for a second and take a trip down memory lane. When Armatus was fist introduced to the hobby what was the general consensus on attitiude? Same as a wolf. Can cohab when small then when large kill everything. What happened with Armatus? Coincidently they became less aggressive the cheaper they got. Down to $50 each and what a change in attitude. Then you saw groups of them, they were in community settings, and general opinion of the fish changed. The same exact thing is already holding true for Aimara. Pricetags can be intimidating, but once people get past them and more people get thier hands on them many times the general opinions change.

Maybe they are just stupid fish, but then again, maybe the way they are raised plays a huge part in thier behavior later down the road?

I would have never even thought to try this combo, BUT the problem was I couldn't tear my eyes off of all the pics samurai-h would post of all his different Aimara varients and his rays. If he trusted his enough to keep with Falkneri and BD I see no problem with trying a similar combo..... :)

As far as pups in the tank, there's no way I'd keep preggo rays with an adult Aimara. Never intended to even try it. If the Aimara pans out and works in my big tank then a divider will go up for the preggo rays.

I think we can all agree there are much more manacing teeth out there kept in ray tanks then Aimara. I'd think an ATF would have a much easier time scooping an eye out then an Aimara. I think an Aimara would probobly give more clues and warning signs of the combo not working then say an ATF. Could be wrong, I've never had ATF, but I know there's plenty of proof out there that those razors can easily split fish. The huge difference between the 2 to me is the fact that when one of those fish is put in a corner or feels threatened it has more of a tendency to retaliate.

Again people attacking for no reason! So here is it right back at you!

Who cares what specimen it is as that has nothing to do with the thread and if I remember correctly Venezuela are the most common of Aimara's imported! Too bad as mine is from Trairao and they are supposed to attain even a bigger size then your Venny! Hence why mine is growing so fast! Not to mention you are wrong on the size as its over 15" now! I didn't know we were comparing tank sizes on this thread but IMO your tank is over stocked no matter what size it is and your Aimara will never attain it's full potential if kept like this for its life! Looks like a crammed pet store tank but then again I may be wrong and the fish could be for sale and this may not be their permanent home! Hopefully I am wrong and they will live their long lives in a more spacious environment.
It's not about where the Aimara from. It's about the size, since you said my Aimara is "small!" I was not wrong about your Aimara. You got it at 6in, have it for less than a year. You barely grow it to 15in, what do you know about Aimara temperment that is bigger than 15in? Nothing!!

Do we know who has the largest Aimara on the forum?? would love to hear from some more owners.

Larry dalberg(hunt for big fish) had a show where cesar his guide took him to a spot he had been trying to go to for years and they caught aimara and rays one after another standing on the bank. They live side by side in the wild dont see why it couldnt work in a tank. They caught a lotta rays and aimara very good show.

I believe Seichi (sp) would be a great source of info regarding rays and Aimara..... He was mixing them many years ago. Many different Aimara variants. Would love to know more about his experiences....
