So in a way they are proposing to kill off one species to preserve another...

I see where they are coming from trying to save a species that "may" otherwise one day become extinct...

But not sure how logging will help? When they are basically removing more of the owls natural habitat... Why not just get rid of the problem birds as best they can and leave the forests alone...

My thoughts exactly...they are taking over the spotted owl's territory ..not only that but they are breeding them out ..i dunno i think its partly survival of the fittest.

please keep political views out of this thread we are talking about the owls....

So they are also planning on using the spotted owl to breed out the other owl species? seems like they are really trying to play the role of mother nature... and as species, i would have thought us humans would have learnt a long time ago not to mess with mother nature on a large scale, or else she'll come right back at us...

Hopefully they have or will have some expert consultants who can actually weigh up all of this properly and in an un-bias sort of way... coz reading it as it is right now just doesn't make much sense... again, especially with the logging of the forests they call home?

no the the barred owls are breeding with the spotted owl making mixes..witch is decreasing the spotted owl population with the "hybrids".

^ Okay that makes sense... but not sure if they mentioned in the article, but how are they actually planning on removing these problem owls... is the gov't just planning on having an open hunting season on Barred owls?

interesting article... so basically it would seem they haven't really done all that much research? eitherway, will be interesting to see what they come up with as a solution... since in that article, they did mention that the old trees take a long time to replace which seems to be the preferred habitat of the owls...

"The plan to kill barred owls would not be the first time the federal government has authorized killing of one species to help another. " They did this before so maybe it might actually help but still doesnt make right.
