Hey guys, long story short, I'm 36 and getting ready to go to school.

The end.

Just kidding, I only took 3 classes about 8 years ago after my Dad passed. I now see that I cant move much in my line of work, I want more control, Im such a good tech that they want me to stay focused and such, long story, also I love to learn and have the time, being that my work is 8-5 Mon-Friday.

Ive got anxiety with tests and trouble focusing in loud classrooms and such but I gotta work on it, plus lots of online classes are good.

Ive got a great desk and work are set up at home now, that will be nice.

I drive so much for work that I keep telling myself I will not want to drive to school, my work is draining mentally, so I use that as well as an excuse, I try to get excited, then I sink again because I didnt want to have to do this at 36, but what if I turn 46 and faced the same thing, IDK.

Outside of some good people in my life, I rely on my faith for this strength and it has helped tons, but from any of you who can give me some added courage and pros of just doing it, I thank you much.

Congratulations on going back to school. You have the advantage of maturity in your favor. It sounds like you may have some dyslexia/learning difficulty issues, which is not always a bad thing. Make sure your counselor is aware of your anxieties--there may be real reasons for them, and get tested for dyslexia/learning difficulties. Accommodations are given to students with dyslexia/learning difficulties, i.e., more time to take tests, tutoring, etc. So get tested as see if you are eligible for additional help that can make you successful in college.

Congrats, dude. You can do this you just have to have that hunger to better yourself, use that to help keep yourself focused on your school work.

My advice, if you have not already done so, is spend some time thinking about what you want out of it. Like what kind of degree you want. Even if you do not have it pinned down, having a general idea is good. And you have time to figure it out later too. Also don't think about college so much, just enroll and don't give it much thought. If you keep thinking about things you build up anxiety. What you have to remember is the positive feeling comes after. The 1st week is probably the hardest because you are adjusting to the schedule and there is some stress of finding certain rooms and knowing your way around the campus.

It gets easier with time. To me it feels almost like high school again. Only difference is now I am way more focused. I am doing really well in all my classes. I may even be one of the brightest in my biology class. Go to a counselor in the school and get help with what classes to take and all that so you have a smooth road ahead to getting a degree. A cool thing about going to college is the opportunities of meeting new people, you can make some friends and there are cute chicks everywhere. If you ever get stressed out just think of the reason why you started in the first place use that to draw motivation from. Just keep at it, and what some people don't realize is just showing up is part of succeeding.

Try not to think how long it is all gonna take just tackle one semester at a time. I am in a similar circumstance as you and I feel/felt just like you but it is not so bad. For the most part the classrooms are quiet during lectures and you have a lot more freedom compared to High school. And don't worry about feeling out of place or being a little anxious. Most people at my school are kids and a lot of them are nervous/anxious/clueless etc.

True. At my school they have services for people with disabilities. Also tutoring is available for most subjects.

Take a ton of those career planning questionnaires and personality tests etc. They do help in narrowing down what you might want out of life. You'll be fine man just dive in!

Congrats on deciding to go back, once you get started it's a lot easier to keep motivated. Are you going to try to go to school full time or part time? Keep working or dedicate yourself to studying? These questions can make a big difference on your approach. If you're going to keep working full time then check to see if any schools near you offer accelerate courses. I'm in an accelerated program right now and I love it. Its one class at a time for six weeks. We meet once a week for four hours. There are specific qualifications you have to meet regarding your work history but if you can get into a program like that then I highly recommend it.

i've also been thinking about going back to school. if only it didn't cost 90K for the bachelor's i want. that's the only thing stopping me.

i think you may be right about not regretting it 10 years from now and wishing you went back to school 10 years ago. just do it if it will improve your life and make you happier man.

Now that's what's up!

36 or 56 years old... School will always welcome you. I admire the young who go to school fresh out of high school. A hair bit more I admire the courage of 30+ year old's who want to take control of their future and don't let pride or others rattle their focus.

Put it this way... I route for the older in any race surrounded by young ins (especially in school).
Ask questions about grants/programs/ fasfa/eop&s/etc... and ask more questions. It does not hurt to see if you qualify for financial breaks!
