Multiple species in one tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Okay, after more research, ughhh... I think I may have a good line-up.

If I maintain a pH of 7, and a temp of 77-80, in my 135 gallon tank, I think the following should work.

Larger Species (8-12")
1 Gold Severum
1 Chocolate (this is a maybe, not sure if it would work, two "large" species)
Medium Species (5-7")
1 Firemouth
1 Honduran Red Point
1 Tapajo Orange Head
Small Species (2-4")
1 Cockatoo Dwarf (or more, depending on availability of different species)
5? Bolivian Rams (they sound as if they do well in small groups as they are social fish, not 100% sure if this would work, but we will see)

Still considering a schooling fish such as Rainbowfish as well as considering a bichir yet.

Would like to add a black or pink convict as well, just not sure if that would work as they sound like they can be peaceful, but feisty.

F0 = wild caught fish
F1 = fry from wildcaught parents
F2 = fry from F1 parents

So on and so forth. F numbers can be (not always) more sensitive to water params.

Rams and apistos can do okay in groups. They are smaller also, so their fights aren't as bad (don't quote me;)). I would look into some rams, and certainly apistogrammas.

A planted 135 with rams and apistos could be nice really. Under the right light these species are really colourful. You could probably have some pairs in there aswell (of the dwarf SA's).

Now, the dwarf species could likely be mixed with the smaller species (blue acaras, firemouths, HRPs), but i'm not so sure i would.

My girlfriend was the same, she is becoming more understanding now i let her name some.

Thank you for clarifying on the F# thing.
I just posted my possible stock list, do you think it would work?
I want a variety, but I also plan on trying to fit certain areas of the tank to certain species, as to create their own lil environment and territory. Who knows if itll work though lol. I want a fairly open area and a fairly well planted area, as well as a good inbetween.

I think your list will work fairly well.if your going with red points then I'd pass on a convict. So sounds like you have decided, now its time to put the tank together:) pics, pics, pics, lol

Sounds like it should work well. I would pass on the convict. Especially with having a hrp, the conspecific aggro might be too much. I wouldn't have one tapajo orange head, they do best in groups of 5+, as is the case with all geos. But i think you would be pushing it with that many. I would look into adding some more apisto species, i think for the size of them you may benefit of a higher quantity.

It may just be me, but i would leave out the bicher. Otherwise you may end up losing some smaller fish. They are a predator so dont be fooled! Look into some L number plecos, you can get some amazing colours - and prices!

Pics will definitely come, just not for a few weeks. I have not even gotten it into my apartment yet, lol. I got it coming in a week or two, very excited. Wont be any fish in it until I get it cycling nicely tho. So within the month, I should hopefully be all set up with fish.

Ah I forgot that the bichirs will do that lol. I will start checking into plecos again. I didnt find anything on the HRPs regarding groups, mostly just pairs. Would it be better to go with a convict rather than one solo HRP if they do better in groups? I was shooting for the more peaceful species line-up. And colorful :)

Plecos are certainly worth a look. HRP's will be fine on their own. If you have a group you will likely end up with a pair which can cause some issues. As they can be quite aggressive. If your after a peaceful tank then leave off multiples. I feel your pain about setting up, it took me ages to get my setup sorted.

Holy crap, I never realized there were sooooo many different kind of pleco. Too bad a zebra runs so expensive. $450 is a bit steep!

Picking up my tank this week! Sooooo excited.

i agree,no convict,solo HRP.a good smaller pleco is the bristlenose.many of the L# plecs potentially get big,and really add a lot to the bioload.

i see you picked out your stock. i would personally do a cool amphilophus like a midas or red devil or trimac and a cool parachromis like a rtm or freddy but a 'peaceful' tank is cool too i guess.

Once I get this tank going and working.... Maybe then I might consider a second one, but for now, peaceful is the way to go for this newb.

any thoughts on the red stripe eartheater? My lfs is expecting a shipment in, and so far, they sound more easier to get than a chocolate. Would this be an okay swap?
