Ornate Birchir or Florida gar?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The 125 has just the O's jag and 4line pimo now. And have a 180 priced out and ready to purchase in July. Given the 125 now would a Florida or a Senegal fit?

get the bigger tank first then the gar and bichir

I think 1 ornate bichir would need 70-120 gallons. So you could not put one in your current aquarium.

Yeah the ornate gets too big. It'd end up being a wetpet lol. And I understand your concern for the fish and would never purchase a fish that I could not care for. My O was the first fish I bought and he started in a 45gal and at 4-5" I went out and bought a 125 for him. He had so much room he didn't know what to do with It haha. In the op I didn't see how big the ornate got. Kinda grouped him with Senegal etc.

Did you see the episode of River Monsters about gars? They're not vicious.

Wasn't planning on getting them both...... just looking for pros and cons and if the 125 would sustain them until july

the Senegal get up to 12" so he be fine in the 125 gallon not the gar

Ok cool. What would you advise for the gar. Would the 180 even be large enough?

yes a 180 is large enough. I'm not sure how big your jag is but gars get beaten around pretty easily. their tails arnt as tough as their body armor and fall off pretty fast is its getting beat up. they grow fast to 12" and their grow rate slows down pretty fast. it almost seems like it stops when they hit 16". you would be fine with the gar in the 125 for awhile if it was just the gar and stuff that doesn't mess with it. i have my 12"er in my 75 with some cichlids, ornate bichir, and catfish. also i hand feed my gar quite often and is way more of a wet pet than my 8" ornate. my gar started eating pellets very quickly but i only recommend floating type. their nose will eventually bend up if they eat stuff off the bottom. i feed mine hikari cichlid gold because thats they higher quality i get in my area. my ornate always hides. he is 8" long and he hides in a tree trunk. I've only seen his full body out twice since i bought him which was months ago. a 125 should be fine for an ornate depending on what else is in there. their extremely flexible so a 2' wide tank isn't extremely necessary. my 8"er can turn around just fine in his 3" wide tree trunk. I'm upgrading my tank soon so don't flame me for that. my gar will most likey be moved to my 500 gallon pond because I'm upgrading to a 125 gallon tank.ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1333428900.893211.jpgIMG_1957.jpg
