How do you aireate a large tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
As far as I know the majority of O2 exchange in an aquarium happens on the first .5 inches of water at the top, your best bet is to have a directional nozzle aimed at the top so that it moves the most water on the surface, sort of like a river current. this eliminates the need for an air pump in most cases. with a 4 foot wide tank you have plenty of surface area at the top to work with.

I use a wave pump near the surface, at the back corner. I also have an airstone hanging below it.

But if you want a long bubble wall, you can use some small gauge soaker hose, and a couple large air pumps. But it shouldn't be necessary.

On most powerheads, there is a venturi adapter, this provides a stream of bubbles that help agitate the surface. It's like having a pump and aerator in one.

you can also buy a venturi tube for about $20

These are attached to outflows of larger pumps.

Most of my tanks are in a line of 3 or 4 tanks on 1 pump, I use venturi tubes on each tank, as opposed to multiple powerheads. Saves on electricity and sockets, and provides lots of agitation, and for fast water dwelling fish, provides a more natural environment.

Again RESEARCH, your lack of undersdtanding of basic things is why your threads always turn to crap. You need to ask questions once you at least have a base knowledge to understand the answers given.

Mate I don't think you have any room to attempt to criticize the kid... Your lack of understanding not only spelling (quoted post above), but the meaning of words, and what forms of words to use is almost embarrassing to read... I'll point to your post above as one of many... Please PM me for more examples and I'd gladly assist in a quick 101 of reading comprehension, spelling, and even a crash course on derivatives.

You'd be better to research this. Understanding how to aerate your tank water will save you many a headache. Adequate surface agitation is usually suffice.

You meant is usually sufficient? Again PM me for a crash course and leave the kid alone.

How could you be planning such a large tank without basic aquaria knowledge?
Are you gunna ask how to cycle the tank next?
Surface agitation will place enough oxygen in your water unless you have a sealed lid or you keep your water temps in the upper 80s but even then you can use a pump rated for 100 g just to supplement more oxygen.
What is your turn over rate planned to be in your tank? I suggest at least 5x an hour.

I was going to use a 3000 gph pond pump along with a 5000 gph sump. I know basic aquaria knowledge. I was more curious of methods to aireate large tanks. I will also put the largest powerheads I can get on the opposite side of the tank from the sump. So that it will push water towards the overflow down into the sump. This will allow for greater waste removal as well. The sump will basically be a divider that is 1/4 inches from the top of the waters surface, the overflow will have tons of media for catching excess food and waste. The lid will be a full sheet of plywood with two 3' by 3' cutouts these will have two latched on pieces of glass that will have handles. The lights will go over these. They will be high spectrum shop lights. The lights will be 3 feet long so that they go over the access doors. I will also buy two small moonlight bulbs and an additional shop light that will have the moonlights in it.

If you are doing 8000gph never worry about o2 unless u are keeping this tank really really hot. don't put media in your overflows you won't be able to clean it and it will get nasty

All you need is surface agitation meaning buy power heads and face them torwads the surface
