My thoughts on why a kid shouldn't build a monster tank (things to consider)

Ok ignoring some of the thread I noticed people saying they are spending hundreds per month to run these monster tanks. I have to ask how? Im running a 125, 40, 10, snapping turtle, snake and my caiman den(many flourecent lights for about 14hrs, 2 large heated ponds). I also have electric hot water, air and heat. I dont touch $150 in electric most months.

For those saying its costing you that extreme amounts, how big is your tank?

^ thats a good point, most parents who are non-fish keepers dont realize that fish can live 20yrs, with some living up to 50-100yrs old...

So they may think that these fish will all be dead by the time little timmy is off in college, just to find out that they will have to care for not only the expenses for the fish but the actual fish themselves with water changes etc...

Yes sir. I know my mom thinks fish only live a couple years at the most.

As a parent, I am always torn between wanting my child to be happy and fulfilled, but still learn about realities of life. So between my son and I, we make compromises...for example, a new deck of Pokemon at $11 is okay, as long as he aces a sight word test, but I won't be getting the Lugio? Ex card he wanted for $30. I think same with fish keeping. And as teens you should emphasis with your parents a little.

Electricity usage based on gallons shouldn't be measured on a linear scale. I can easily afford my 4 tanks, but I know a monster tank would run my bill through the roof.
