Armatus Keepers out there ....

Water quality is great, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate all come up as 0 with the test kit of dropper bottles, pH is between 6.8-7.2, temp 82.5-83.5, plus poor water quality would be indicated in the other fish as well, not just one, so it's not water quality, pH, or temp.

LOL sashimimaster!

I hope your armatus doesn't go through the problems you had with your other payaras. I currently have 2 red tails and 2 armatus. I love these guys! Its an odd occurrence yes, but please don't dismiss the fact that it could have been head trauma. A while ago I lost a payara for no apparent reason, I was talking to my friend whom owns the local LFS and he said he must have gotten a good knock to the skull, I brought vials of my water for him to test because I couldn't believe what I tested my water the params were perfect, so I wanted a second opinion. What you described was exactly what my fish went through, and what my friend described as well. He says these things pick up so much speed and if startled they will knock themselves senseless! So to help my payaras know hey thats the end of the tankl but the brakes! I placed ornaments and such at the ends of my tank to make sure they don't hurt themselves, or hurt themselves that bad!

Best of luck with your armatus!

Temp seems kind of high...I don't think the water where they come from is that hot.

I had some small ones that were gasping for breath until I dropped the temp to the mid 70's and they've been fine since.

LMAO so the smelt superstition lives on :(

Mock me if you want but it is the only logical conclusion that I could come to after thinking back on how I cared for my payara.

haha, mac and cheese comment is funny, but i'm still sad :-( i never thought it was possible, but thinking about it now, the head trauma is the most likely culprit, thank you gin. I did a waterchange that day, and cant remember whether he was acting funny before, but i dont think so. And i know when i was doing the waterchange i closed the bottom cabinet, and it banged by accident, and one of the vampires did hit the wall from the noise. I never suspected anything cause i know the fish have panicked and hit before, and i know for a fact my Goliaths have hit 10 times harder, and 100 times more, but i do remember feeling it in the glass when the vampire hit. I just never would have thought that could have caused death, especially since his nose wasnt damaged or anything else. But i guess if you rule out all the possibilities, whats left, however improbable, must be the reason, and this is the only event that was out of the ordinary. I merely dismissed it immediatly, knowing like i said that the fish have bumped into things before, and harder and there never was a problem. I do have plants on either side of the tank, with a big open area in the middle as well, to minimize them hitting the sides. I guess its unlikely, but he could have hit his head just right. I appreciate the info, and unless a better theory arises, this is the one i believe is the most probable, but i will keep the smelt in the freezer for a while krichardson!! Man, i'm terrified to do a waterchange or have anyone walk by the tank now, gonna have to put up some caution tape and seal off the living room!!

i'd also say, as far as temp, mid 70's is low for them ... they live in Northern South America, which is right on the equator with very high water temps ... i'd say your guy was breathing heavy at high temps because you didnt have enough Oxygen, and as you increase temp you need more aeration, since hotter water holds less oxygen, however, whatever works, works, and if you've had no problems roll with it
