125 Gallon Biotope

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What a steal! I love their colors. I hope you'll get a big school of them if all goes well. Plants are looking good too, I'm sure they'll take over the tank in no time :D The ones in the left and right corner are still fake huh?

The water does appear to be a bit cloudy, or is that just the camera?

Thanks for putting up the video. The fish look nice, it's too bad the lighting doesn't help show their true colors! The whole tank looks brown, IMO, and it's a bit crowded in there for my preference but this is probably why it's possible.

Keep the updates coming!

Yeah, I didn't know how I would feel about them, but I am really glad I put them in! Actually the plants in the left and right are real java ferns. They are just super green! The water is still a bit cloudy but getting better. I thought I would hold off on the WC for a day or two, so I can see if it goes away.

Yeah the video isn't my idea of a perfect tank. Overcrowded, and not the best lighting. It seemed to me that the attention of the male saum was focused on the female, and not the other stock. I wonder if that is one of the reasons the geos were left alone? I thought I have read that the Male Saum will be pretty rough on a female. I just like the fact that his tank is pretty close to the size of mine and he has way more fish than I am going to have and everything seems to be going well.

I see, I only thought they were fake since they were already in there with the fake plants on your original post, plus their dark(oval) bases too, you know what I mean :)

There's a lot of factors to consider when you have community tanks, everyone has to feel comfortable/satisfied. The male saum can be abusive to the female if he wants to breed but she's not ready yet. This is why visual barriers are important in the setup and the presence of hiding spots such as caves as well. Once they start breeding though, the tables are turned and the female will be the aggressor, hahaha. Well it's good that you're not having a pair, I think.

I believe that the rest of the fish were just dithers from how they were behaving; the geos seemed on edge, IMO, though I'm not an expert on them nor do I have experience caring for them. I just saw a lot of fin nipping here and there so I can't say they were relaxed. There wasn't much free space on the bottom as well since a good portion of it was covered by the rocks and dw. I believe the tank's a 115G? It's crazy to think that some spawning went down in that tank!

I'm looking forward to seeing your version of this combo!

I know what you mean, haha.

From what I have read and seen, Tapajos act like that a lot of the time. They seem to establish a pecking order and then make sure that it is maintained. Here is a excerpt from "Seriously Fish"

"G. sp. ‘orange head’ is gregarious and tends to exist in loose aggregations unless spawning, with juveniles in particular displaying strong grouping instincts. A group of 5-8 individuals should be the minimum purchase and these will form a noticeable dominance hierarchy. When maintained in smaller numbers weaker specimens can become the target of excessive antagonism by dominant individuals or the group may fail to settle and behave nervously."

So it seems this could be a factor no matter what they are in the tank with. Just like everything else it depends on the fish. They seemed very playful to me, even with the nipping.

The tank dimensions he had I figured to be around 132 US gallons. A bit longer and a bit wider than mine. I am super excited too! I should get the Tapajos this week!

Well, since the temps have been so high, my Geo's have not shipped yet. The store I am buying them through, hopefully will get them in next week. Problem is that I will be on vacation that whole week. They have agreed to house them until I can pick them up. I am actually kind of glad it worked out this way because i didn't want to put new fish in the tank and then leave for a week.

It's nice things are working out for you, even though not in a straightforward way. I'm assuming you put in a deposit for the Geos?

Have a good time!

I actually paid for them up front. We are headed down to Branson Missouri with my wifes family, so it should be a good time. Even though we have to drive 7 hours with my 5 year old and 14 month old twins that have a tendency to get car sick:barf:
