Finally got my self an RB

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have a small peice of drift wood i might dril one big hole in the rosck instead of the 4 that are there, i have access to slate which i could make a cave out of?? what could i use to stick it together?? aquarium silicone??

i might just buy a big rooted piece of bog wood a few live plants and a plant pot of some sort??

Wow cool tank mate, u could keep 3 in there imo. I think just a decent size piece of dw would finish the tank off nicely! I like how it is now but a piece of dw wouldn't hurt! They also love bubbles and currents to swim in. Red belly piranhas are awesome and some of the most intriguing fish!

BTW red bull f1 headquarters are in Milton keynes, I'm way to obsessed. Saw f1 in indy 05,06, and 07

not sure if the tanks big enough its 90cm long roughly, 15 inchs deep and about 16inchs tall what do you think??

also if i were to put 3 more in i would have to upgrade the filter?? i have a 1000lph filter atm fluval 4plus that keeps a strong current in the tank, so would i probably need an external if i had 3???

can i just put 2 more in there then without any issues??

I have a pump and equipment for bubbles so i might set that up tomorrow at some point

ahh i see sounds good f1 is quality!! never been to see it though might have to go soon!!

If you want a more natural setting of your aquarium I would do mostly driftwood and some plants (if you want to do live plants that is). There's not too many rocky structure in natural piranha habitats but again how you want to tank setup is a personal thing, everyone can be unique.
In terms of bubbles it's no necessary at all but again it's a person preference.
Given the footprint of your tank (~35"x15"x16") its more like a 40 gallon breeder which is suitable for one rbp for life, when the fish is still small you may put more in there but remember rbp has the potential of getting to 12" so that tank will be too small and with 3 the bio load will be tripled so it'll be more work to keep the water quality in check.
in terms of filtration upgrade it depends on your media setup, if you have enough bio media to effectively convert ammonia to nitrite then to nitrate then you do not NEED to upgrade but in your case I think you'll need to upgrade to a larger filter, either an external canister filter or you can add couple HOB filter (aquaclear 110 for example).
one thing I like to point out if you decide to feed pellet as a main stable diet is that do not over feed. pellet is very nutritious so very small amount could equal the calorie intake of a full size meal if you were to feed fish or shrimp, etc. but since pellets are so small the fish will eat a lot more to get "full", over time the fish will become obese if feeding too frequent and in large quantity and lack of exercise to burn off all the extra calorie.
at around 5-6" you don't need to feed them on a daily schedule, I feed mine about once a week when they are that size.

What filtration would you reccomend for my tank??

How long does it take a piranha to get to max size also ive been told up to 5years?? and been told they can hit 12inches in around a year and a half

Need a 7-8x turnover rate so Atleast 300gph filter with plenty of bio media, maybe a powerhead for current.

After a year their adults and sexually mature meaning they can breed, about 7-10" in the 1st year, slow after that. Keep water clean and nutritious variety!

The filter i have atm is 1000lph, i want an external one though there much better, i see alot of piranha setups with powerheads soo ill grab one of those :)

ill buy some more driftwood and plants over the next few weeks

will they eat the live plants?? or shall i get fake ones??

I've never been able to successfully keep any plant in my substrate, my shoal rips them up, so I keep one fake one for cover, they nibble it occasionally but no harm done. And yes canister and sump are ideal, my fx5 does work, and u never have to upgrade.

I would say you can go with an eheim 2217 for the size of your tank. personally I would pick live plant over plastic but that's just a personal taste

Ill look into them now :) i prefer live plats but dont want them all being ripped up so i might buy one see how long it lasts then buy more if it doesnt tear it up

Cant have a sump as there no rooom under the tank for one unless i get a new stand and fx5 would be too large to fit in the cabinet

Think im going to look into the eheim 2217 as jp8091 mentioned

Also what is an ideal tem to keep my RBP at?? the tank is at 24 degrees most of the time is this ok??
