You see that with every fish, carp are one of the biggest, commons and grass, save one fish and kill the rest....

I can honestly say I have turned 2 folks away from that, they were gals, when I put them on a big grass carp, they changed their mind. They both used to killem and call them "trash fish". They dont do it anymore. Also taught the both how to release them and not just chuck them back in the water. First time I saw a gal do that, I about messed myself... I had a little talk with her right then and there :)
Yup the common/grass carps and other roughfish suffered big time than esox. You can't believe how common with illegal dumping with dead roughfish is. I went to a public fishing area while on the job and there was lots of dead fish. I counted 54 carps, 8 bowfins, 37 bullheads, 4 buffaloes, 6 suckers, 5 rock bass and two northerns.

As for some posters in here that has an idea about leave a fish on bank and hoping a wild animal will take care of these fish....you are dead wrong. Most fish at the public fishing areas were untouched beside the flies and the maggots.

lmao@ embarassed the fish by placing a cigarette in it's mouth. i was unaware that fish could feel emotions such as embarrassment

yeah i see alot of fish left to rot around here too. sucks but what can you do about it?.

Yeah people who think bass are the best kill bowfin, muskie, kusk, etc. idk i think catching bowfin muskie and etc is way better then catching a bass btw bowfin are prehistoric and along the 100,000 years they have been around nothing has gone extinct. I HATE BASS its gets old after a while i think bowfin and muskie hit way harder then bass too.

not true for every fisherman but bass fisherman seem to be the ones most arrogant about killing other species that eat the baby bass (although they can never dispute that they have been living together for many years with no ill effects). Mostly true of "uneducated" fisherman.

Walleye fisherman around here seems to be the ones most arrogant about killing other species that's eating walleyes. They're willfully to kill smallmouth bass too to protect the walleye fishery.

thats messed up that there is such a hate in a beautiful fish that takes long time to mature.

We kill them up in the lake my grandparents have in Minnesota. Granted, I won't slit their gut and release them, but I have no problem killing them the normal way (bat to the soft spot) and taking them to my neighbor up there that enjoys eating them, or leaving them for the black bear or composting them.

The lake used to be full of walleye. The DNR stocks TONS of muskie because it brings in the people that want to fish for muskie. It has absolutely decimated the walleye population up there, and the lake is no longer stocked as it was naturally before the muskie took over (in the past 10-15 years).

So I say it depends on the circumstance. I personally like fishing for them and releasing them, but I can see the other side of the story in some cases.

Ughh. It's getting harder and harder to find responsible fishermen these days. In saltwater around here, there are so many "junk species" like Searobins, Skates, Dogfish, and even Horseshoe Crabs, and usually when someone catches one, it ends up suffocating on the dock or swung up in the air and slammed down on the ground. It's terrible. I dont catch-and-kill, but I have no problem with people taking what they need.
Take what you NEED, not just what you CAN.

A lot of people (I used to frequent a local fishing board, but I left after too many arguments about this) criticize anyone with a sense of ethics when it comes to fishing. I actually once got flamed for several pages after calling out a local fishing boat for gutting and cleaning live fish. That's like cutting the meat off a live cow. The problem is that people see fish as an inanimate resource, and dont see the need to treat them with any kind of respect... and they laugh at you if you believe otherwise.

Wrong. Take what you - or the neighbor - can eat. But killing them and leaving them on the bank is wasteful and wrong. Also, if you are feeding the Bears, dont get all upset and break out the shotgun when they start getting in your yard and going through your trash.

I'm going to go with "correct."

Or should we just let the invasive snakehead live in Florida as well? What about the asian carp? Since they don't need to "needlesly die."

It's the same thing on our lake with the muskie. They were not originally there. They were introduced by the DNR to spur people to come and do "sport fishing" on the lake. And they are now devistating what was originally there. It's almost to the point where there are NO walleye, bass, blue gill, crayfish, or perch which used to be plentiful. At this point, the northern pike population is starting to decline because the muskie have nothing else to eat. But on the plus side, there's 50" plus muskie pulled all the time :screwy:

And I don't feed the bear near our place, so get off your high horse. There's a bear sanctuary, and I take the fish there. And who shoots a bear with a shot gun??? I've got a 30-06 for big game. And believe me, it's taken lots of cute furry bambies down :) I also shoot coyotes with it because they are a nuisence. I don't clean them or use them for anything. They just rot. I'm sure you'll tell me that's wrong too.

And you know how they kill those cow (the ones you reference as being more humanely processed than fish) in the meat processing plant here? They walk under a bridge. On that bridge stands a man with a sledge hammer because electricity or bullets are too expensive. Life for an animal that gets eaten by man is not humane. If you don't like it, be a vegan.
